Objective: The presence of microorganisms in a wound may lead to the development of pathologically extensive inflammation, and either delay or prevent the healing of hard-to-heal (chronic) wounds. The aim of this case series is to explore the use of topical gentamicin ointment, an aminoglycoside with activity against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria, as an option to address hard-to-heal wounds.
Method: We present a retrospective case series of patients with hard-to-heal wounds of varying pathophysiologies treated with topical gentamicin.
Objective: Innovation in wound healing, particularly regarding diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), is needed to reverse the number of diabetes-related amputations. This study evaluated a novel approach and performance of a multimodal wound matrix in converting stalled DFUs into a healing trajectory.
Method: Patients with either type 1 or 2 diabetes and with foot ulcers (Wagner grade 1 and 2), were screened to determine eligibility for treatment.
Chronic wounds are a significant health problem worldwide. Often they are initially managed with various focal treatments until a specialist becomes involved, sometimes weeks or months after treatment has begun. Even at the specialist level, practices and guidelines are inconsistent due to a lack of high-level evidence.
