Objective: To report a case of multidrug-resistant osteomyelitis successfully treated with telavancin, rifampin, and meropenem.

Case Summary: An 18-year-old male with spina bifida was treated primarily in the outpatient setting over the course of 133 days with multiple antimicrobials for a recurrent right calcaneal wound and osteomyelitis infection. Initial cultures were positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, which were treated with intravenous vancomycin 1 g every 12 hours, increased after 13 days to 1.

A survey of patients with inflatable penile prostheses: assessment of timing and frequency of intercourse and analysis of implant durability.

Introduction: This study was conducted to determine how long after inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) surgery patients attempt sexual intercourse and the frequency of subsequent relations. We also examined survival-related factors for the AMS 700 CX, Mentor Alpha 1, and Mentor Alpha Narrow Base.

Aims: The aim was to survey men who received IPPs and collect information about their return to sexual function and frequency of use, and to assess the resilience of their devices.

Comparison of finger and forehead oximetry sensors in postanesthesia care patients.

We compared loss of pulse oximetry signal (dropout rates) for both finger and forehead sensors in postanesthesia patients. Pulse oximetry is a widely practiced method for measuring oxygen saturation. Several studies in various patient populations have demonstrated that low flow states, patient movement, and hypothermia may result in poor signal quality with the use of finger oximetry sensors.

A novel Treponema pallidum antigen, TP0136, is an outer membrane protein that binds human fibronectin.

The antigenicity, structural location, and function of the predicted lipoprotein TP0136 of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum were investigated based on previous screening studies indicating that anti-TP0136 antibodies are present in the sera of syphilis patients and experimentally infected rabbits. Recombinant TP0136 (rTP0136) protein was purified and shown to be strongly antigenic during human and experimental rabbit infection.

Reactivity of antibodies from syphilis patients to a protein array representing the Treponema pallidum proteome.

To identify antigens important in the human immune response to syphilis, the serum antibody reactivity of syphilitic patients was examined with 908 of the 1,039 proteins in the proteome of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum using a protein array enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Thirty-four proteins exhibited significant reactivity when assayed with human sera from patients in the early latent stage of syphilis.

Genome scale identification of Treponema pallidum antigens.

Antibody responses for 882 of the 1,039 proteins in the proteome of Treponema pallidum were examined. Sera collected from infected rabbits were used to systematically identify 106 antigenic proteins, including 22 previously identified antigens and 84 novel antigens. A survey of patients with inflatable penile prostheses for satisfaction.

Purpose: We assessed patient satisfaction with 3 types of penile prostheses, namely the AMS 700 Series(R), Mentor Alpha 1(R) and Mentor Alpha NB(R).

Materials And Methods: The subjects consisted of 330 patients selected by stratified, systematic random sampling from among 1,298 subjects undergoing virgin 3-piece inflatable penile implant surgeries performed by the same surgical team at 1 hospital between January 1992 and December 1998. Data were collected by computer assisted telephone interviewing with a survey developed by the authors.
