Objective: This review summarizes the particular challenges of diabetes in older individuals and the evidence base guiding the selection of treatment targets and strategies in this population.
Methods: An in-depth literature search was conducted to identify the evidence base from randomized, controlled, and population-based epidemiological studies, as well as guidelines derived from expert opinion.
Results: Older patients are a highly heterogeneous population with respect to the pathogenesis and course of diabetes and, as a group, manifest significant comorbidities that impact treatment goals and strategies.
In December 2011, the first delegation of oncology nurses from the United States visited Havana, Cuba. The delegation included oncology nurses, educators, and leaders from across America and provided opportunities to learn about the healthcare system, cancer, and oncology nursing in Cuba. Delegation members attended lectures, toured facilities, and enjoyed Cuban culture.

The primary objective of this phase II study was to determine progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with 1 or 2 prior chemotherapy regimens for unresectable/metastatic soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Secondary objectives included objective response rate (ORR), clinical benefit rate (CBR), overall survival (OS), pharmacokinetics, and safety.

Experimental Design: An eight-compartment population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic model was used to describe the absolute neutrophil count (ANC)-time profile (neutropenic response) following pemetrexed doses of 300 to 1,400 mg/m(2) administered every 21 days. The analyses pooled data from 13 studies including 279 patients (161 supplemented with oral folic acid and intramuscular vitamin B(12), and 118 unsupplemented; 248 Western and 31 Japanese) who received 857 treatment cycles.

This review highlights the discovery and development of chemotherapy at Eli Lilly & Company over the past 30 years from the Vinca alkaloids-vincristine, vinblastine, and vindesine-to targeted therapy. During the late 1970s, Lilly began an exploration of new synthetic compounds based on solid tumor screening models. Several novel antimetabolites with the potential to treat solid tumors were identified.

Female patients with stage IIIB or IV breast cancer received gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 and then epirubicin 15 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, and 15 of 28-day cycles. Thirty-five patients with stage IV disease, a median age of 59 years (range, 39-73), and a median Karnofsky performance status of 90 (range, 60-100) were enrolled.
