Schistosomiasis, a potentially fatal chronic disease whose etiological agents are blood trematode worms of the genus spp., is one of the most prevalent and debilitating neglected diseases. The treatment of schistosomiasis depends exclusively on praziquantel (PZQ), a drug that has been used since the 1970s and that already has reports of reduced therapeutic efficacy, related with the development of -resistant or -tolerant strains.

The Deposition of a Lectin from on the Surface of Titanium Dioxide Nanotubes Improved the Cell Adhesion, Proliferation, and Osteogenic Activity of Osteoblast-like Cells.

Titanium and its alloys are used as biomaterials for medical and dental applications, due to their mechanical and physical properties. Surface modifications of titanium with bioactive molecules can increase the osseointegration by improving the interface between the bone and implant. In this work, titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiONTs) were functionalized with a lectin from the plasma of the fish aiming to favor the adhesion and proliferation of osteoblast-like cells, improving its biocompatibility.

Cytotoxic effect and apoptosis induction by Bothrops leucurus venom lectin on tumor cell lines.

Neoplastic transformation is the abnormal proliferation of cells. These transformations are often related to changes in cell surface glycoconjugates which can be detected by lectins. We evaluated the anti-tumor potential of BlL, a galactoside-binding lectin isolated from Bothrops leucurus venom as well as its cytotoxicity and hemolysis activity.

Purification of a lectin with antibacterial activity from Bothrops leucurus snake venom.

A novel lectin was isolated from Bothrops leucurus snake venom using a combination of affinity and gel filtration chromatographies. The lectin (BlL) agglutinated glutaraldehyde-treated rabbit and human erythrocytes with preference for rabbit erythrocytes. Galactose, raffinose, lactose, fetal bovine serum and casein inhibited lectin-induced rabbit erythrocyte agglutination.
