Introduction: Excessive crying, sleeping, and eating disorders are among the most prevalent mental health diagnoses in the first 3 years of life and involve significant health service use. Parents of infants with excessive crying/sleeping/eating disorders report high levels of stress, since they feel incapable of soothing and/or nurturing their baby. Infants' distress can lead to a breakdown in parents' mentalizing abilities and, more specifically, parental mind-mindedness in the parent-child interaction.

Because of their high spatial resolution over extended lengths, distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) enable us to monitor a wide range of structural effects and offer great potential for diverse structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. However, even under controlled conditions, the useful signal in distributed strain sensing (DSS) data can be concealed by different types of measurement principle-related disturbances: strain reading anomalies (SRAs), dropouts, and noise. These disturbances can render the extraction of information for SHM difficult or even impossible.

Background: Human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive tumor with insufficient therapies available. Especially, novel concepts of immune therapies fail due to a complex immunosuppressive microenvironment, high mutational rates, and inter-patient variations. The intratumoral heterogeneity is currently not sufficiently investigated.

Mineral aerosols form a key component of Earth's dynamic biogeochemical systems, yet their composition and mass are variable in time. We reconstruct patterns in mineral aerosol flux from East Asia, the second largest global dust source, in a peat mire in northern Japan. Using geochemical fingerprinting, we show for the past ~3600 years that high but variable tephra flux dominated regional aerosol loads.

Nearshore seagrass, kelp, and other macroalgae beds (submerged aquatic vegetation [SAV]) are productive and important ecosystems. Mitigating anthropogenic impacts on these habitats requires tools to quantify their ecological value and the debits and credits of impact and mitigation. To summarize and clarify the state of SAV habitat quantification and available tools, we searched peer-reviewed literature and other agency documents for methods that either assigned ecological value to or calculated equivalencies between impact and mitigation in SAV.

TDP-43 proteinopathy, initially disclosed in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), coexists with tauopathy in a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, termed multiple etiology dementias (MEDs), including Alzheimer's Disease (AD). While such co-pathology of TDP-43 is strongly associated with worsened neurodegeneration and steeper cognitive decline, the pathogenic mechanism underlying the exacerbated neuron loss remains elusive. The loss of TDP-43 splicing repression that occurs in presymptomatic ALS-FTD individuals suggests that such early loss could facilitate the pathological conversion of tau to accelerate neuron loss.

Activated carbon filters are used for the removal of hazardous gases from the air. This research applied vibrational spectroscopy methods, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to characterize hydrogen sulfide adsorption on impregnated carbon materials with metals having reactivity toward hydrogen sulfide. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated the formation of a new chemical bond between the impregnating metals and the sulfur, indicated by the appearance of a new band at 618 cm.

Understanding cellular architectures and their connectivity is essential for interrogating system function and dysfunction. However, we lack technologies for mapping the multiscale details of individual cells and their connectivity in the human organ-scale system. We developed a platform that simultaneously extracts spatial, molecular, morphological, and connectivity information of individual cells from the same human brain.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated how previous SARS-CoV-2 infections affect immunity after booster shots with bivalent mRNA vaccines adapted for variants BA.4/5.
  • Results indicated that those with prior infections had higher levels of anti-spike antibodies after vaccination, but the increase was notably greater in uninfected individuals.
  • Both groups showed better neutralizing abilities against the original strain of the virus compared to newer Omicron subvariants, but breakthrough infections were more common in the previously uninfected group who had lower neutralizing activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the immunogenicity of the bivalent Omicron BA.4/5 vaccine in dialysis patients and compared it to healthy controls, focusing on vaccine-induced humoral and cellular immunity, especially considering prior infections.
  • Findings showed that the vaccine significantly increased levels of IgG, neutralizing antibodies, and CD4/CD8 T-cells in both groups, with strong cross-reactivity against both the parental SARS-CoV-2 strain and Omicron subvariants.
  • Notably, dialysis patients with prior infections exhibited higher levels of spike-specific CD4 T-cells and lower CTLA-4 expression compared to those without prior infections, suggesting better immune response, while vaccination was well tolerated with fewer adverse events in dialysis patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the protein Rad influences heart function during stress by affecting calcium ion influx and contraction strength.
  • It focuses on specific phosphorylation sites on Rad (Ser272 and Ser300) that modulate its interaction with voltage-gated calcium channels, which are crucial for increasing cardiac output.
  • The findings suggest that Rad's ability to detach from the membrane is essential for enhancing calcium currents during sympathetic nervous system activation, especially when the heart is responding to threats.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is still a deadly tumor due to its highly infiltrative growth behavior and its resistance to therapy. Evidence is accumulating that sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) acts as an important tumor-promoting molecule that is involved in the activation of the S1P receptor subtype 1 (S1PR1). Therefore, we investigated the effect of ACT-209905 (a putative S1PR1 modulator) on the growth of human (primary cells, LN-18) and murine (GL261) GBM cells.

The genome of SARS-CoV-2 encodes for a helicase (nsp13) that is essential for viral replication and highly conserved across related viruses, making it an attractive antiviral target. Here we use nanopore tweezers, a high-resolution single-molecule technique, to gain detailed insight into how nsp13 turns ATP-hydrolysis into directed motion along nucleic acid strands. We measured nsp13 both as it translocates along single-stranded DNA or unwinds double-stranded DNA.

Introduction: The EXPEDITION-8 clinical trial has demonstrated that treatment-naïve patients with compensated cirrhosis (TN/CC) of HCV genotypes 1-6 can achieve a 98% intent-to-treat sustained virologic response rate 12 weeks post-treatment with an 8-week glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (G/P) regimen. Further real-world evidence is needed to support the effectiveness of 8-week G/P in a clinical practice setting and to consolidate these treatment recommendations. The aim of this study is to contribute real-world evidence for the effectiveness of an 8-week G/P treatment in TN/CC patients with HCV genotypes 1-6.

Introduction: Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy is highly effective in curing hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in people who inject drugs (PWID). Previous studies showed declining persistence to DAA therapy over the course of treatment. This study compares real-world medication persistence to prescription refills for 8- versus 12-week DAA in treatment-naïve PWID with chronic HCV with compensated cirrhosis or without cirrhosis.
