Article Synopsis
  • * Initial thoughts about her condition pointed to improper regulation of water in the body, but further investigation indicated that her symptoms might be due to poor fluid intake and a misdiagnosed kidney issue.
  • * The patient's liver enzyme levels improved with supportive treatment, allowing for the use of remdesivir, and her sodium levels gradually stabilized, underscoring the need for tailored patient management during COVID-19 recovery.

Many reports on COVID-19 have highlighted an association between patient characteristics upon admission for COVID-19 and how they affect variable progressions of the disease severity and, ultimately mortality. In this cohort, we analyzed data from patients in the Americas who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19, and were hospitalized. We retrieved data from identified studies selected from full-text screening to identify relevant patient demographics: age, gender, race, duration of hospital stay, and comorbidities.

Background: Vaccination is the most important prophylactic measure taken to curb COVID-19 pandemics. This study was undertaken to throw light on the safety of Covishield vaccine among health care workers (HCWs) and to assess the co-variates associated with incidence of adverse events.

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary care center in South India as part of the HCW vaccination drive.

Objectives: Sulfasalazine has been widely used in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis. This study aims to assess persistence with sulfasalazine and also frequency and severity of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) encountered with this very well-established disease-modifying anti-rheumatoid drug.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study was done in 1,114 patients from medicine and rheumatology outpatient departments of six centers across India.

Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease, and musculoskeletal ultrasonography (USG) is being increasingly used for evaluating disease activity in patients, particularly in India where such studies are limited.
  • The study aimed to compare disease activity scores from clinical evaluations with scores obtained from musculoskeletal ultrasound in RA patients.
  • Results indicated a strong positive correlation between disease activity scores (like DAS 28 and CDAI) and the USG findings, suggesting that USG can effectively assess joint conditions and may serve as a cost-effective alternative to traditional imaging methods.

Unlabelled: The coexistence of raised blood pressure (BP) in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major contributor to the development and progression of both macrovascular and microvascular complications. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of uncontrolled BP and its associated factors in persons with T2DM in a district in Kerala.

Methods: The study was conducted in Ernakulam district in Kerala, and a total of 3,092 individuals with T2DM were enrolled after obtaining consent.

Background: Radiation plays a major role in the management of localized prostate cancer (CaP). There are limited studies reporting the quality of life (QOL) and toxicity with CaP tomotherapy.

Materials And Methods: This is a single-institutional prospective observational study evaluating the acute toxicity and QOL of patients with CaP receiving tomotherapy from May 2018 to October 2019.

: The sleeve gastrectomy (SG) can be associated with postoperative gastroesophageal reflux and when a hiatal hernia (HH) is present, it should be fixed. Earlier studies have shown that 20% of SG have a concomitant hiatal hernia repair (SG+HHR). The aim of this project is to determine the rate of SG+HHR in a large state administrative database.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a polyarticular disorder with many extra-articular features. Cardiovascular disorders, including heart failure (HF), are the leading causes of mortality in RA patients. We studied the prevalence of left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) in patients with RA.

Background: Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is a chronic, painful condition and is often resistant to conventional therapy. We evaluated the benefits of a combined steroid and lignocaine injection in resistant cases of tennis elbow.

Materials And Methods: In this prospective, interventional study, we included chronic lateral epicondylitis patients resistant to analgesics and physiotherapy.

Introduction: Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) therapeutic failure is treated with biologics.

Aim: To compare the clinical outcomes of different biologics for Asian Indian patients with AS who have NSAID therapeutic failure.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-five AS patients with NSAID failure were administered Etanercept (n=15) (50mg SQ, weekly) or Infliximab (n=20) (5mg/kg IV every 2(nd) month) based on patient convenience or physician discretion as per 2015 ACR/SAA/SPARTAN recommendations.

Background: Medical stores management in hospitals is a tedious and time consuming chore with limited resources tasked for the purpose and poor penetration of Information Technology. The process of automation is slow paced due to various inherent factors and is being challenged by the increasing inventory loads and escalating budgets for procurement of drugs.

Methods: We carried out an indepth case study at the Medical Stores of a tertiary care health care facility.

Objective: Inter-individual variations to methotrexate (MTX) response among rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have been attributed to clinical heterogeneity and genetic variations influencing MTX pharmacology. In this study, we analyzed the association of polymorphisms in ATIC, AMPD1, ADA, and ADORA2A from the purine biosynthetic pathway with MTX response in RA patients from north India. We also assessed the cumulative contribution of these polymorphisms together with those from the receptor-metabolizer-transporter and folate pathway genes that we have previously investigated.

Objective: Methotrexate (MTX) is the drug of choice for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but is effective only in around 60% of treated patients. Bioavailability of MTX may be a major determinant of response status and this may be governed by variations in MTX receptor and transporter genes and genes responsible for polyglutamation and deconjugation. We investigated the contribution of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in RFC, FOLR1, FPGS, GGH and MDR1 genes to MTX response in RA patients from North India.

Osteoporosis (OP) is being increasingly recognized in inflammatory rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Ethnicity influences bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. Due to paucity of data on this aspect of RA from Asian countries including India, we prospectively studied 84 premenopausal women with RA of at least 2 years duration and 247 healthy, age (within 5 years) and sex-matched controls.
