Shock Ignition is a two-step scheme to reach Inertial Confinement Fusion, where the precompressed fuel capsule is ignited by a strong shock driven by a laser pulse at an intensity in the order of [Formula: see text] W/cm[Formula: see text]. In this report we describe the results of an experiment carried out at PALS laser facility designed to investigate the origin of hot electrons in laser-plasma interaction at intensities and plasma temperatures expected for Shock Ignition. A detailed time- and spectrally-resolved characterization of Stimulated Raman Scattering and Two Plasmon Decay instabilities, as well as of the generated hot electrons, suggest that Stimulated Raman Scattering is the dominant source of hot electrons via the damping of daughter plasma waves.

Laser-driven x-ray backlighting can be used to image fast dynamic processes like the propagation of laser-driven shock waves in matter. We demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility of operating the JUNGFRAU detector designed by PSI, a direct detecting x-ray detector, in environments with extreme electromagnetic pulses. The electromagnetic pulse-protective housing is specifically designed for this detector and optimized for pump-probe experiments at the Petawatt High-Energy Laser for Heavy Ion EXperiments (PHELIX) facility at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH.

Based on the concept of circular economy, citrus peel was considered a valuable source of bioactive compounds for high-value foods. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying is a novel technology appropriated for the dehydration of heat-sensitive products such as citrus peel. In current work, EHD drying of citrus peel was performed based on alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) sources at various voltage levels (9, 18, 27, 36, and 45 kV).

Provision of light during incubation has shown the potential to enhance hatching traits and affect posthatch productivity, physiology, and behavior. In this study, 2 repeated trials were conducted to investigate the effect of photoperiod and strain on the embryo temperature, hatching traits and posthatch growth performance of 2 commercial strains of broilers (Ross 308 and Cobb 500). In each trial, hatching eggs were randomly distributed into 6 incubators with 3 photoperiod treatments: blue LED light for 12 h d (12L:12D) or 18 h d (18L:6D) during entire incubation were compared with no illumination condition (DARK).

Wetted-foam layers are of significant interest for inertial-confinement-fusion capsules, due to the control they provide over the convergence ratio of the implosion and the opportunity this affords to minimize hydrodynamic instability growth. However, the equation of state for fusion-relevant foams are not well characterized, and many simulations rely on modeling such foams as a homogeneous medium with the foam average density. To address this issue, an experiment was performed using the VULCAN Nd:glass laser at the Central Laser Facility.

Electrohydrodynamic drying is a novel non-thermal technique for dehydrating heat-sensitive foods. However, its industrial applications are limited due to the underexplored effects of material properties and environmental conditions on product quality. For this purpose, a multifactorial experiment was designed to study the effects of material thickness, load density, external airflow, and humidity on the EHD drying efficiency and quality of apple slices.

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying is a promising technology to better preserve the nutritional content and sensory appeal of dried fruits and vegetables. To successfully scale up this technology, we need to rethink the current EHD dryer designs. There is also a significant potential to further enhance the nutritional content and sensory quality of the dried products by optimizing EHD process parameters.

The article substantiates the necessity in applying the complex approach to handle medical social problems of patients in elderly and senile age suffering of complete absence of teeth conditions the relevance of developing medical and social work with this contingent. In the complex management of patients receiving dental orthopedic care, professional social workers apply medical, psychological, pedagogical and social measures targeted to maintain their actual health. It is demonstrated that such activities can be implemented within the framework of wide network of social service organizations in cooperation with dentists.

In a recent experimental campaign, we used laser-accelerated relativistic hot electrons to ensure heating of thin titanium wire targets up to a warm dense matter (WDM) state [EPL114, 45002 (2016)10.1209/0295-5075/114/45002]. The WDM temperature profiles along several hundred microns of the wire were inferred by using spatially resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy looking at the Ti K characteristic lines.

The formation of high energy density matter occurs in inertial confinement fusion, astrophysical, and geophysical systems. In this context, it is important to couple as much energy as possible into a target while maintaining high density. A recent experimental campaign, using buried layer (or "sandwich" type) targets and the ultrahigh laser contrast Vulcan petawatt laser facility, resulted in 500 Mbar pressures in solid density plasmas (which corresponds to about 4.

Interest in the development and adoption of nonthermal technologies is burgeoning within the food and bioprocess industry, the associated research community, and among the consumers. This is evident from not only the success of some innovative nonthermal technologies at industrial scale, but also from the increasing number of publications dealing with these topics, a growing demand for foods processed by nonthermal technologies and use of natural ingredients. A notable feature of the nonthermal technologies such as cold plasma, electrohydrodynamic processing, pulsed electric fields, and ultrasound is the involvement of external fields, either electric or sound.

Previous experiments have demonstrated positive effect of Acadian(®) extract of Ascophyllum nodosum on plant stress-resistance, however the mode of action is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to understand the physiological effect of Acadian(®) seaweed extract on the plant response to drought stress. Leaf temperature and leaf angle were measured as early-stage indicators of plant stress with thermal imaging "in situ" over a 5-day stress-recovery trial.

Activation of proliferative processes (Ki-67 proliferation index) and local oxidative stress was found in biopsy material from the mucosa of the large intestine of patients at the early stages of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome on days 5-10 after disease onset. Analysis of data of rectosigmoidoscopy and clinical examination refl ected the presence of colitis. It can be suggested that activation of proliferation is typically associated with local oxidative stress during various pathological processes.

Humanin (HN), a 24-amino acid peptide encoded by the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene, was discovered by screening a cDNA library from the occipital cortex of a patient with Alzheimer's disease (AD) for a protection factor against AD-relevant insults. Earlier, using the yeast two-hybrid system, we have identified the M-phase phosphoprotein 8 (MPP8) as a binding partner for HN. In the present work, we further confirmed interaction of HN with MPP8 in co-immunoprecipitation experiments and localized an MPP8-binding site in the region between 5 and 12 aa.
