Almost 380,000 new cases of oral cancer were reported worldwide in 2020. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for 90% of all types of oral cancers. Emerging studies have shown association of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in carcinogenesis.

Purpose: The purpose was to measure the frequency of nonsurgical site complications in patients with mandible fractures, describe the types of complications, and identify the risk factors associated with these complications.
Study Design, Setting, Sample: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Helsinki University hospital between 2018 and 2021.
Objectives: Matrix metalloproteinases are enzymes that participate in numerous inflammatory responses and have been targeted as biomarkers in numerous pathologic states. The detection of active matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) using a mouthrinse point-of-care test (POCT) has emerged as a diagnostic marker for periodontitis and other systemic inflammatory states. The objective of this pilot study was to assess the applicability of aMMP-8 POCT in an oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic and to evaluate the relationship between aMMP-8 levels and different patient groups.

Material And Methods: Patients with one or two fractures of the dentate part of the mandible treated surgically an intraoral approach were included in this retrospective study. The primary outcome variable was SWD.
Background/aims: Delayed treatment of a mandibular fracture can lead to complications. Therefore, early diagnosis is important. The aim of this study was to clarify the specific features of mandibular fractures in aged patients and the effect of age on possible missed diagnoses.

Background: Primary sites for the metastasis of oral cancer are the cervical lymph nodes. Although there has been considerable technical advancement in the radiological imaging, capability to recognize all metastatic lymph nodes pre-operatively has remained as a challenge. Thus elective neck dissection (END) has remained as reliable practice to treat cervical lymph nodes.

Material And Methods: A retrospective study of patients with fractures of the dentate part of the mandible included patients with intraorally treated simple fractures of the mandibular body, symphysis, and parasymphysis. The primary outcome variable was postoperative surgical site infection.
Background And Aims: Tumors of the oral cavity often require extensive resections leading to significant hard and soft tissue defects. Microvascular free flaps, consisting of both hard and soft tissue, are often required in reconstructions. Hybrid flaps, composed of two different joint free flaps, offer potential alternatives for head and neck reconstruction.

Problematic social media use (PSMU) is a habitual pattern of excessive use of social media platforms. Past research has suggested that PSMU predicts risky online behavior and negative life outcomes, but the relationship between PSMU and cybercrime victimization is not properly understood.

This study aimed to clarify the injury profiles of patients sustaining ERI-related craniofacial fractures and their relationship with other severe head and neck injuries. This retrospective study included all patients with craniofacial fractures admitted to a tertiary trauma center during 2013 to 2018.

The aim of the study was to assess factors leading to revision surgery and implant position of primary orbital fracture reconstructions. A retrospective cohort included patients who underwent orbital floor and/or medial wall fracture reconstruction for recent trauma. Demographics, fracture type, surgery and implant-related variables, and postoperative implant position were analyzed.

As paediatric mandibular fractures have special features, we sought to clarify the occurrence and types of DIs among this patient group. We assessed how age, injury type, and fracture location affects the occurrence of DIs and thereby defined which patients are most susceptible.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between p53 expression and microbial acetaldehyde production in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
Study Design: Oral mucosal biopsies from 22 patients with OSCC and 24 healthy controls (HCs) were collected. p53 expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry.
The purpose of this study was to clarify the frequency of missed mandibular fractures and to identify possible predictive factors for missed diagnosis. This was a retrospective study that included patients <20 years of age with a recent mandibular fracture. The outcome variable was missed mandibular fracture, which was determined when a fracture was not suspected or diagnosed during the patient's first assessment in primary healthcare.

The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse a consecutive series of patients with oral and oropharyngeal carcinoma who had had sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) at our hospital during 2008-2017. A total of 70 patients with clinically and radiologically confirmed primary oral (n=67) or oropharyngeal (n=3) carcinoma, with no signs of metastatic lymph nodes preoperatively (clinically N0) were included. Patients' clinical and personal data, characteristics of the tumours, sentinel lymph node (SLN) status and outcomes were recorded.

Objective: The aim of this study was to highlight the current underestimation of the role of alcohol in facial fracture etiology and patients' daily life.
Study Design: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted. Alcohol consumption habits were evaluated, and data were collected through a constructed questionnaire and interview.
Objectives: We assessed the periodontal situation radiologically according to tumour p16 status.
Materials And Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of tonsillar cancer and availability of a digital panoramic radiograph (DPR) during a 5-year period were included in this retrospective study. The predictor variables were periodontal stability, marginal bone loss, marginal bone loss without periodontal stability and total number of teeth.
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of single-dose antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) in the prevention of bacteraemia following tooth extractions at our clinic.
Material And Methods: Fifty patients undergoing tooth extractions were enrolled. The need of AP was determined according to the health status and possible allergies of the patients.

The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse the incidence of complications and loss of flaps after primary reconstructions for oral cancer in 191 patients at our hospital over the five years 2005-2010. The patients' clinical and personal details, characteristics of the tumours, types of microvascular flap, complications, and outcomes were recorded. The soft tissue flaps used most often were the fasciocutaneous radial forearm free flap (RFFF) (n=86, 45%) and the anterolateral thigh free flap (ALTFF) (n=48, 25%) while the most commonly used osseous flap was the deep circumflex iliac artery flap (DCIA) (n=25, 13%).

Treponema denticola is an important periodontal pathogen capable of tissue invasion. Its chymotrypsin-like proteinase (CTLP) can degrade a number of basement membrane components in vitro, thus suggesting a contribution to tissue invasion by the spirochete. The aim of this study was to analyze the localization of CTLP in chronic periodontitis tissues ex vivo.

Objective: The main aim of this prospective study was to explore the ability of the oral microbiome to produce acetaldehyde in ethanol incubation.
Study Design: A total of 90 patients [30 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC); 30 oral lichenoid disease (OLD); 30 healthy controls (CO)] were enrolled in the study. Microbial samples were taken from the mucosa using a filter paper method.
Human exposure to radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic energy is known to result in tissue heating and can raise temperatures substantially in some situations. Standards for safe exposure to RF do not reflect bio-heat transfer considerations however. Thermoregulatory function (vasodilation, sweating) may mitigate RF heating effects in some environments and exposure scenarios.

In yeast acetaldehyde is a by-product of the pyruvate bypass that converts pyruvate into acetyl-Coenzyme A (CoA) during fermentation.
The Aims Of Our Study Were: (i) to determine the levels of acetaldehyde produced by Candida albicans in the presence of glucose in low oxygen tension in vitro; (ii) to analyse the expression levels of genes involved in the pyruvate-bypass and acetaldehyde production; and (iii) to analyse whether any correlations exist between acetaldehyde levels, alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme activity or expression of the genes involved in the pyruvate-bypass.
