Dynamics of Stripe Patterns in Supersolid Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose Gases.

Despite ground-breaking observations of supersolidity in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, until now the dynamics of the emerging spatially periodic density modulations has been vastly unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the nonrigidity of the density stripes in such a supersolid condensate and explore their dynamic behavior subject to spin perturbations. We show both analytically in infinite systems and numerically in the presence of a harmonic trap how spin waves affect the supersolid's density profile in the form of crystal waves, inducing oscillations of the periodicity as well as the orientation of the fringes.

Here, we propose accessible signatures of these modes in harmonically trapped spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, where supersolidity appears in the form of stripes. By suddenly changing the trapping frequency, an axial breathing oscillation is generated, whose behavior changes drastically at the critical Raman coupling.

Temporary Kerato-Prosthesis to Resolve Traumatic Loss of a Healed Corneal Button.

The aim of this study is to report a rare case of traumatic complete loss of a donor corneal button successfully resolved by a 24-h implantation of a temporary kerato-prosthesis. A healthy 30-year-old man with a history of prior penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) presented with an open globe following accidental contusive trauma with a ball, while he was playing football. At slit-lamp evaluation, complete dehiscence of the wound at the graft-host junction and complete corneal button loss was evident.

Isolated Facet Joint Arthritis in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a group of childhood inflammatory arthropathies which has variable clinical presentations and can affect multiple joints including the spine. Arthritis in facet joints is rare and very unusual to be the only presentation of JIA. We report a 16-year-old female who presented with back pain and stiffness, in which CT of the lumbar spine showed evidence of facet joint erosion and pelvis MRI showed facet joint arthritis consistent with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Mobile Screening Units for the Early Detection of Breast Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease: A Pilot Telemedicine Study in Southern Italy.

Telemedicine is the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to improve patient outcomes by increasing access to care, medical information and services. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate and support the implementation of screening and early detection programs in the prevention of breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases with the establishment of a remote diagnosis through the use of ICT in mobile units. A total of 430 individuals were recruited in an area of Southern Italy.

Long-term evaluation of corneal sub-basal nerve recovery after photorefractive keratectomy and influence of pars plana vitrectomy.

The corneal sub-basal nerve (SBN) plexus is destroyed during photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and its recovery is still a matter of debate. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) was used to evaluate SBN plexus in 23 patients at a distance of 10-25 years (mean 15.6 years) from myopic PRK.

Corneal Subbasal Nerve Density and Sensitivity After Pars Plana Vitrectomy Using Contact or Noncontact Wide-Angle Viewing Systems.

Purpose: To assess corneal subbasal nerve density (SBND) and corneal sensitivity (CS) after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) without intraoperative 360-degree laser treatment using contact or noncontact panoramic viewing systems.

Methods: This is a prospective study of 34 eyes affected by RRD, which underwent PPV using contact (18 eyes) and noncontact (16 eyes) panoramic viewing systems; 12 eyes which underwent scleral buckling, and 17 eyes which underwent cataract surgery. SBND and CS were assessed before surgery and 3 and 6 months postoperatively by in vivo confocal microscopy and Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometry.

Enhancement of recovery from mental illness with l-methylfolate supplementation.

People suffering from depression, schizophrenia, and dementia often have measurably lower levels of serum folate compared to people not experiencing psychiatric disorders. Augmentation of SSRI and SNRI antidepressant medications with l-methylfolate has been demonstrated to increase their effectiveness and onset of action. Even the use of l-methylfolate as a stand-alone monotherapy has been observed to exert antidepressant properties.

Tricriticalities and Quantum Phases in Spin-Orbit-Coupled Spin-1 Bose Gases.

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of spin 1, with equally weighted Rashba and Dresselhaus couplings. Depending on the antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic nature of the interactions, we find three kinds of striped phases with qualitatively different behaviors in the modulations of the density profiles. Phase transitions to the zero-momentum and the plane-wave phases can be induced in experiments by independently varying the Raman coupling strength and the quadratic Zeeman field.

Corneal Complications During and After Vitrectomy for Retinal Detachment in Photorefractive Keratectomy Treated Eyes.

To evaluate the occurrence of late-onset corneal haze (LOCH) after vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)-treated eyes. This observational cohort study comprised 13 eyes of 13 patients who underwent vitrectomy for RRD and who had been subjected to PRK years earlier. The occurrence of LOCH was evaluated together with all the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative factors that could affect final corneal status.

Bifocal refractive corneal inlay implantation to improve near vision in emmetropic presbyopic patients.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical outcomes, safety, and efficacy of cataract surgery with the implantation of a toric intraocular lens (IOL) in eyes with stable pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD).

Methods: Eleven eyes (eight patients) diagnosed as stable PMD and cataract underwent mini-incision 2.2 mm cataract surgery followed by the implantation of hydrophobic toric aspheric IOL (AcrySof IQ Toric IOL, Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA).

Capsule contraction syndrome with a microincision foldable hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens: two case reports and review of the literature.

Here we present 2 cases of capsule contraction syndrome (CCS). In both cases, a hydrophilic acrylic Akreos MI60 (Bausch and Lomb) intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted in the capsular bag through microincision cataract surgery, and the literature on the subject is reviewed. Since CCS has been described after the implantation of every IOL type, it is unlikely that the Akreos MI60 chemical and physical properties may cause CCS.

Impact of intraoperative topical hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 2% versus sodium hyaluronate 1.2% on corneal reepithelialization after intentional epithelial debridement during vitrectomy.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the intraoperative use of topical hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) 2% versus sodium hyaluronate 1.2% on corneal reepithelialization time and final corneal status after intentional epithelial debridement during vitrectomy for proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

Methods: Forty eyes of 40 patients were included in the study, divided into 2 groups of 20 eyes.

Forty-two-month outcome of intravitreal bevacizumab in myopic choroidal neovascularization.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term efficacy of bevacizumab in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to pathological myopia.

Methods: In this retrospective single-center non-comparative study the medical records of 29 eyes from 29 patients with naïve CNV secondary to high myopia and at least 42 months of follow up were reviewed. All eyes received a loading dose of one intravitreal injection per month for two consecutive months and were retreated on an as-needed basis during the course of follow up.

Morphologic study of the cornea by in vivo confocal microscopy and optical coherence tomography after bifocal refractive corneal inlay implantation.
