The composition of the surface waxes of three apple ( Malus domesticaL.) cultivars ("Florina", "Golden B" and "Ozark Gold") has been studied by means of spectroscopic and GC-MS analysis of the class-fractionated mixture of components. Odd n-alkanes, mainly C(27) and C(29) molecules, are prevalent in the saturated fraction.

Article Synopsis
  • A glycoprotein with alkaline phosphatase activity has been purified from cartilage matrix vesicles and shows high affinity for calcium ions (Ca2+).
  • Antibodies were used to study its distribution in chondrocytes and calcifying cartilage, revealing localization mostly in the resting zone and weak reactivity in the proliferating and hypertrophic regions.
  • The glycoprotein appears to play a crucial role in the calcification process, as it is synthesized and exported by chondrocytes when calcification begins.
