O solid-state NMR at ultrahigh magnetic field of 35.2 T: Resolution of inequivalent oxygen sites in different phases of MOF MIL-53(Al).

MIL-53(Al) is a member of the most extensively studied metal-organic framework (MOF) families owing to its "flexible" framework and superior stability. O solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy is an ideal site-specific characterization tool as it probes local oxygen environments. Because oxygen local structure is often altered during phase change, O SSNMR can be used to follow phase transitions.

Burnout among Portuguese healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: During COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have had high workload and have been exposed to multiple psychosocial stressors. The aim of this study was to evaluate HCWs in terms of the relative contributions of socio-demographic and mental health variables on three burnout dimensions: personal, work-related, and client-related burnout.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using an online questionnaire spread via social networks.

Background: The nurse accompanies individuals throughout their lives and, when in the hospital environment, provides care to those who face illness or injury. Nurses witness numerous situations involving ethical dilemmas that require a prompt and effective response based on ethical and moral principles.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether bioethics education in nursing influences the level of moral competence and opinion of nursing students about three ethical dilemmas.

Micellar effects and analytical applications of nitro substitution in 4-Nitro--alkyl-1,8-naphthalimide by cysteine derivatives.

The aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions of the nitro group of 4-Nitro--alkyl-1,8-naphthalimides by thiolate anions produce fluorescent derivatives and their rates are strongly accelerated by micelles of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride even at low pH. Acceleration factors of this reactions can reach million-fold. As the products are oxidant-insensible, this reaction allows the determination of SH- containing compounds such as cysteine, glutathione or proteins even in oxidative conditions.

Hypericum perforatum L is a remarkable source of high-value secondary metabolites with increasing applications in pharmaceutical industry. However, improvement in the production of secondary metabolites through genetic engineering is a demanding task, as H. perforatum is not amenable to Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation.

The Teaching of Ethics and the Moral Competence of Medical and Nursing Students.

In a time marked by the development of innovative treatments in healthcare and the need for health professionals to deal with resulting ethical dilemmas in clinical practice, this study was developed to determine the influence of the bioethics teaching on the moral competence of medical and nursing students. The authors conduct a longitudinal study using the Moral Competence Test extended version before and after attending the ethics curricular unit, in three nursing schools and three medical schools of Portugal. In this questionnaire the participant is confronted with three ethical dilemmas (related to theft, euthanasia and the torture of a terrorist) and asked to evaluate arguments for and against the attitude of the main character (Worker, doctor and judge).

Second-Generation RT-QuIC Assay for the Diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Patients in Brazil.

The recent development of IQ-CSF, the second generation of real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), for the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) represents a major diagnostic advance in the field. Highly accurate results have been reported with encouraging reproducibility among different centers. However, availability is still insufficient, and only a few research centers have access to the method in developing countries.

A Leishmania amastigote-specific hypothetical protein evaluated as recombinant protein plus Th1 adjuvant or DNA plasmid-based vaccine to protect against visceral leishmaniasis.

Most studies evaluating vaccine candidates against visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have used parasite promastigote-expressed antigens; however, Leishmania proteins expressed in the amastigote forms should be considered, since few hours after infection this stage comes into contact with the host immune system and is responsible for the development of the disease. In this context, in the present study, a Leishmania amastigote-specific hypothetical protein, called LiHyJ, was evaluated as a recombinant protein plus saponin as an adjuvant or DNA vaccine to protect against VL. The vaccine effect was evaluated by means of the evaluation of immunological and parasitological analyses performed in BALB/c mice against Leishmania infantum infection.

Inhalation of silica particles causes silicosis: an occupational lung disease characterized by persistent inflammation with granuloma formation that leads to tissue remodeling and impairment of lung function. Although silicosis has been studied intensely, little is known about the crucial cellular mechanisms that initiate and drive the process of inflammation and fibrosis. Recently, found in inflammatory zone 1 (FIZZ1) protein, produced by alveolar macrophages and fibroblasts have been shown to induce the proliferation of myofibroblasts and their transdifferentiation, causing tissue fibrosis.

A candidate vaccine for human visceral leishmaniasis based on a specific T cell epitope-containing chimeric protein protects mice against infection.

Leishmaniases are neglected diseases caused by infection with parasites and there are currently no prophylactic vaccines. In this study, we designed in silico a synthetic recombinant vaccine against visceral leishmaniasis (VL) called ChimeraT, which contains specific T-cell epitopes from Prohibitin, Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 5a and the hypothetical LiHyp1 and LiHyp2 proteins. Subcutaneous delivery of ChimeraT plus saponin stimulated a Th1 cell-mediated immune response and protected mice against infection, significantly reducing the parasite load in distinct organs.

Point-of-care quantification of serum cellular fibronectin levels for stratification of ischemic stroke patients.

The abundance of cellular fibronectin (c-Fn) for ischemic stroke patients and the narrow time-window (<4.5 h) for the decision to administer the thrombolytic treatment with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) are challenging for the development of a point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic platform. We report a case of stratification of ischemic stroke patients based on a magnetoresistive biosensor platform that quantifies the c-Fn levels in a small volume of serum, within the clinically relevant time-window.

The spectroscopic study of oxygen, a vital element in materials, physical, and life sciences, is of tremendous fundamental and practical importance. O solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy has evolved into an ideal site-specific characterization tool, furnishing valuable information on the local geometric and bonding environments about chemically distinct and, in some favorable cases, crystallographically inequivalent oxygen sites. However, O is a challenging nucleus to study via SSNMR, as it suffers from low sensitivity and resolution, owing to the quadrupolar interaction and low O natural abundance.

Parasitological and immunological evaluation of a novel chemotherapeutic agent against visceral leishmaniasis.

Aims: Treatment for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is hampered by the toxicity and/or high cost of drugs, as well as by emergence of parasite resistance. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new antileishmanial agents.

Methods And Results: In this study, the antileishmanial activity of a diprenylated flavonoid called 5,7,3,4'-tetrahydroxy-6,8-diprenylisoflavone (CMt) was tested against Leishmania infantum and L amazonensis species.

Background: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common cancer that invades the dermis through the basement membrane. The role of the basement membrane in poorly differentiated cSCC is not well understood.

Objectives: To study the effect that loss of the laminin subunit alpha-3 (α3) chain from the tumour microenvironment has on tumour invasion and inflammatory cell recruitment.

The nuclear-localized CAX-interacting protein VvCXIP4 is exported to the cytosol after a Ca pulse, to activate the tonoplast-localized Ca/H exchanger VvCAX3. Vacuolar cation/H exchangers (CAXs) have long been recognized as 'housekeeping' components in cellular Ca and trace metal homeostasis, being involved in a range of key cellular and physiological processes. However, the mechanisms that drive functional activation of the transporters are largely unknown.

Applying an Innovative Model of Disaster Resilience at the Neighborhood Level : The COPEWELL New York City Experience.

Community resilience is a community's ability to maintain functioning (ie, delivery of services) during and after a disaster event. The Composite of Post-Event Well-Being (COPEWELL) is a system dynamics model of community resilience that predicts a community's disaster-specific functioning over time. We explored COPEWELL's usefulness as a practice-based tool for understanding community resilience and to engage partners in identifying resilience-strengthening strategies.

Cell Competition, the Kinetics of Thymopoiesis, and Thymus Cellularity Are Regulated by Double-Negative 2 to 3 Early Thymocytes.

Cell competition in the thymus is a homeostatic process that drives turnover. If the process is impaired, thymopoiesis can be autonomously maintained for several weeks, but this causes leukemia. We aimed to understand the effect of cell competition on thymopoiesis, identify the cells involved, and determine how the process is regulated.

Development of an animated infographic on Permanent Health Education.

Objective: to create an animated infographic on the concept of Permanent Health Education according to the National Policy and its main differences compared to continuing education and health education.

Method: a methodological study that analyzed context and knowledge gaps with a literature review and brainstorming; synthesized knowledge into a concept map; built and validated a script; created a didactic design; and produced infographic media. 18 representatives from the Center for Permanent Education and Humanization participated in the stages of context analysis and synthesis of knowledge, and six specialists participated in the validation of the script.
