  • Biventricular pacing (BIV) is the standard treatment for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), but 30% of patients do not respond; conduction system pacing (CSP) is an alternative worth exploring.
  • A study involving 96 patients compared outcomes based on intraoperative measurements of interventricular conduction delay (IVCD) to determine whether BIV or CSP would be more effective.
  • Results showed that patients in the group evaluated for IVCD had significantly higher response rates to CRT, suggesting that this assessment can inform better treatment choices.

Gender medicine studies how health status and diseases differ between men and women in terms of prevention, therapeutic approach, prognosis, and psychological and social impact. Sex and gender analyses have been demonstrated to improve science, contributing to achieving real appropriateness and equity in the cure for each person. Therefore, it is fundamental to consider, both in preclinical and clinical research, the different clinical and biological features associated with sex and/or gender, where sex differences are mainly influenced by biological determinants and gender ones by socio-cultural and economic matters.

The gold standard treatment in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction involves autologous tissue transplantation, but this can have complications. Artificial grafts are an alternative, but the best option is debated. This study aimed to assess the biocompatibility and integration of a silk fibroin textile prosthesis (SF-TP) with peri-implant bone tissue and the native ACL.

Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake remains low among people who could benefit, some of whom may prefer alternatives to oral PrEP, such as long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (LAI-PrEP). We evaluated the potential for LAI-PrEP provision in pharmacies through a mixed methods study of pharmacists in California, where Senate Bill 159 enables pharmacists to independently provide oral PrEP.

Methods: In 2022-2023, we conducted an online cross-sectional survey of California pharmacists and pharmacy students (n = 919) and in-depth interviews with pharmacists (n = 30), both of which included modules assessing attitudes about PrEP provision.

The growth of high-quality graphene on flat and rigid templates, such as metal thin films on insulating wafers, is regarded as a key enabler for technologies based on 2D materials. In this work, the growth of decoupled graphene is introduced via non-reducing low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) on crystalline Cu(111) films deposited on sapphire. The resulting film is atomically flat, with no detectable cracks or ripples, and lies atop of a thin CuO layer, as confirmed by microscopy, diffraction, and spectroscopy analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed highly sensitive Hall sensors using monolayer single-crystal graphene, achieving a carrier mobility over 12000 cm V s and low residual carrier density.
  • The sensors demonstrated a Hall sensitivity greater than 5000 V A T, a level typically reached only with more complex methods involving encapsulated graphene.
  • They also introduced a simple polymeric encapsulation technique, which stabilizes the sensor performance in ambient conditions and reduces degradation over extended periods, enhancing the potential for graphene-based Hall sensors in practical applications.

The risk of aseptic loosening in cementless hip stems can be reduced by improving osseointegration with osteoinductive coatings favoring long-term implant stability. Osseointegration is usually evaluated in vivo studies, which, however, do not reproduce the mechanically driven adaptation process. This study aims to develop an in silico model to predict implant osseointegration and the effect of induced micromotion on long-term stability, including a calibration of the material osteoinductivity with conventional in vivo studies.

Health care is currently showing a fall in heart failure (HF) incidence and prevalence, particularly in developed countries, but with only a subset receiving appropriate therapy to protect the heart against maladaptive processes such as fibrosis and hypertrophy. Appropriate markers of advanced HF remain unidentified, which would help in choosing the most suitable therapy and avoid major compliance problems. Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) is a good choice, being a non-invasive imaging technique which is able to assess cardiac deformation in a variety of conditions.

(1) Background: The use of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to relieve meconium obstruction of prematurity in the first days of life has been reported, with NAC reducing the viscosity of luminal contents by cleaving the disulfide bonds of mucoproteins. However, its use in this population should be further explored since it has been associated with hypernatremia and transient increase in transaminases and bilirubin. (2) Methods: In this retrospective study, we included neonates admitted because of enteral feeding intolerance and intestinal obstruction from 2019 to 2021 who received NAC as a rescue therapy before explorative laparotomy.

To endow an implant surface with enhanced properties to ensure an appropriate seal with the host tissue for inflammation/infection resistance, next-generation bone implant collagen-polyphenol nanolayers were built on conventional titanium surfaces through a multilayer approach. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was performed to investigate the chemical arrangement of molecules within the surface layer and to provide an estimate of their thickness. A short-term (2 and 4 weeks) in vivo test of bone implants in a healthy rabbit model was performed to check possible side effects of the soft surface layer on early phases of osteointegration, leading to secondary stability.

Primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis is a multifactorial condition with a complex cause that affects patients across different age groups, impairing physiologic and psychologic well-being, and substantially reducing patient quality of life and overall productivity. To effectively manage this condition, healthcare providers need to be well informed about treatment guidelines, as well as the available therapeutic options and the evidence supporting their use. Nonsurgical interventions should be regarded as the primary treatment option, particularly for patients in the initial phases of this condition.
