Background And Objective: The high incidence of thyroid nodular disease has raised concerns on the therapeutic management of benign thyroid nodules. The development of minimally invasive techniques is an alternative to surgery and has a low rate of complications. Our objective was to evaluate the safety and efficacy profile of percutaneous ethanol injections (PEI) with ethanol aspiration of symptomatic cystic and predominantly cystic thyroid nodules (cystic component > 50%) treated in the thyroid nodule high-resolution unit (TNHRU) of Hospital de Tortosa Verge de la Cinta Hospital, Tarragona, Spain.

Introduction: The Optilume® Paclitaxel-coated urethral dilatation balloon is an alternative to conventional endoscopic treatments that combines mechanical dilatation with local delivery of paclitaxel.

Objective: To describe the success rate and analyze the safety of the device in real clinical practice. To evaluate possible predictors of treatment failure.

Management of deceased and living kidney donor with lithiasis: a multicenter retrospective study on behalf of the renal transplant group of the Spanish urological association.

Background: To maximize the availability of suitable grafts and ensure effective management, several reports have demonstrated successful outcomes when using kidney grafts with urolithiasis. This multicenter study reports on the management and long-term outcomes of kidney transplantation using renal grafts with lithiasis.

Methods: Retrospective data from three Spanish hospitals were analyzed for kidney transplants involving grafts with nephrolithiasis performed between December 2009 and August 2023.

Postoperative troponin surveillance to detect myocardial infarction: an observational cohort modelling study.

Background: Clinical presentation of postoperative myocardial infarction (POMI) is often silent. Several international guidelines recommend routine troponin surveillance in patients at risk. We compared how these different guidelines select patients for surveillance after noncardiac surgery with our established risk stratification model.

Perioperative Cardiovascular Risk Assessment and Management in Liver Transplant Recipients: A Review of the Literature Merging Guidelines and Interventions.

Liver transplantation (LT) is the second most performed solid organ transplant. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a critical consideration for LT candidacy, particularly in patients with known CAD or risk factors, including metabolic dysfunction associated with steatotic liver disease. The presence of severe CAD may exclude patients from LT; therefore, precise preoperative evaluation and interventions are necessary to achieve transplant candidacy.

Effect of a national guideline on postoperative troponin surveillance: a retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the effect of the 2017 Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) guidelines on troponin surveillance after noncardiac surgery.

Methods: This was a single-centre, retrospective, observational study. Patients aged 40 yr or older undergoing intermediate- to high-risk elective noncardiac surgery between 2016 and 2021 were included.

The impact of national culture in the development of complexity reasoning skills: An international comparison.

There is a clear inequality in gender distribution for the STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Furthermore, there is a noticeable lack of diversity and a socio-economic gap that requires actionable solutions. To explore potential factors that affect the participation of women in STEM, this paper reviews two possible groups of determinants: national culture and complexity thinking.

Purpose Of Review: Pathologies of the prostate in men are one of the most prevalent clinical conditions today [1]. Specifically, pelvic inflammatory disease such as prostatitis can cause symptoms and syndromes different from urological ones, such as bowel or nervous system manifestations. This has a largely negative impact on the quality of life of patients.

Sex specificity of dispersal behaviour and flight morphology varies among tree hollow beetle species.

Background: Flight performance and dispersal behaviour can differ between sexes, resulting in sex-biased dispersal. The primary sex ratio of populations may also explain dispersal bias between sexes, as this bias may evolve with the primary sex ratio to reduce intrasexual competition. Although dispersal bias between sexes is relevant to population dynamics, there are few studies on sex-biased dispersal in insects.

Impact of cardiopulmonary bypass duration on efficacy of fibrinogen replacement with cryoprecipitate compared with fibrinogen concentrate: a post hoc analysis of the Fibrinogen Replenishment in Surgery (FIBRES) randomised controlled trial.

Background: Coagulopathy in cardiac surgery is frequently associated with acquired hypofibrinogenaemia, which can be treated with either purified fibrinogen concentrate (FC) or cryoprecipitate. Because the latter is not purified and therefore contains additional coagulation factors, it is thought to be more effective for treatment of coagulopathy that occurs after prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). We examined the impact of CPB duration on the efficacy of the two therapies in cardiac surgery.

Parry-Romberg Syndrome and Temporal Lobe Refractory Epilepsy: Case Report.

The Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS), also known as hemifacial atrophy, is a rare neurocutaneous disease with the prevalence of 1/700,000 cases. It is more common in women than men, with an early onset of disease usually within the first two decades of life. Even though the etiology of PRS is unknown, it is thought to be a multifactorial disease that involves hereditary, posttraumatic, autoimmune, infectious, and neoplastic factors.

Saproxylic Cetoniidae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea): A 'Females' World' or a Question of Dependence on Deadwood?

We explored the dependence of some Cetoniidae species on saproxylic environments and microhabitats in a Mediterranean oak forest by analyzing species collected using different kinds of traps-log emergence, hollow emergence, and interception traps-and the sex ratio of the species in each trap. Comparing the sex ratio of the species collected via emergence versus interception was useful to unravel the degree of dependence on saproxylic microhabitats. Among the species studied, Cetonia aurataeformis Curti, 1913 (Coleoptera: Cetoniidae) was the only obligate tree hollow inhabitant.

Genotyping of Human Papillomavirus in Cervical Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions in Mexican Women.

Approximately 40 genotypes of the human papillomavirus (HPV) have been identified in cervical mucosa. In particular, HPV-16 and HPV-18 have been associated with cervical neoplasia. Squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) are precursors of cervical cancer.

Turfgrass biomass production and nutrient balance of an urban park irrigated with reclaimed water.

The increasing demand for water resources in arid and semiarid countries has stimulated the use of non-conventional water resources such as reclaimed water. Consequently, turfgrass irrigation with reclaimed water has become a regular practice in these regions. The main goal of this research was to assess the effects of reclaimed water (RW) irrigation in Madrid urban parks by studying changes in grass nutrient balance and its biomass production.

Fear of becoming pregnant among female healthcare students in Spain.

The inconsistent use of hormonal contraceptive methods can result, during the first year of use, in one in twelve women still having an undesired pregnancy. This may lead to women experiencing fear of becoming pregnant (FBP). We have only found one study examining the proportion of FBP among women who used hormonal contraceptives.

Hydrologic modeling in a small mediterranean basin as a tool to assess the feasibility of a limno-reservoir.

The SWAT model was applied to the Ompólveda River Basin (Guadalajara, central Spain) to assess the hydrological feasibility of the Pareja Limno-reservoir. A limno-reservoir is a water management infrastructure designed to counteract some negative impacts caused by large reservoirs under Mediterranean climate. Highly detailed inputs were selected to set up the model.

[Expression of gamma interferon during HPV and Chlamydia trachomatis infection in cervical samples].

Introduction: The aim of this study was to mesure the expression of gamma interferon in HPV and Chlamydia trachomatis infection in squamous intraepithelial lesions.

Method: Samples from 100 patients diagnosed by colposcopy with or without squamous intraepithelial lesions were used in the present study. Each patient was found to be infected by HPV and C.

[Development and validation of a patient satisfaction questionnaire on pharmaceutical care in community pharmacies].

Objective: To develop and validate a rapid administration questionnaire to assess patient satisfaction with the pharmaceutical care (PhC) service in Spanish community pharmacies.

Methods: A semi-structured and self-administered questionnaire was designed focused on the cumulative experience of patients with the PhC service. This was reviewed by a panel of 8 experts in 2 rounds.

Microbiological water quality and its relation to nitrogen and phosphorus at the Pareja limno-reservoir (Guadalajara, Spain).

Bordering on the edge of the Entrepeñas reservoir (Guadalajara, Spain), next to the village of Pareja, a small dam that allows a body of water to develop with a constant level has been built. Initiatives like this (which we have termed "limno-reservoirs") are innovative in Spain and around the world. Earlier reservoirs such as this one were constructed to create a habitat for birds, but the Pareja limno-reservoir is the first to promote socio-economic development.

[Validating a patient-satisfaction questionnaire about professional advice received for minor illness in community pharmacies].

Objective: Analysing the evidence regarding the validity and reliability of a patient-satisfaction questionnaire about professional advice received for minor illness in Argentinean community pharmacies.

Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. All patients or their caregivers who visited the pharmacies during the study period (March and April, 2006) and knew how to read and write were included.

Relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and high blood pressure by community pharmacists in Spain.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the influence that different risk factors (age, gender, obesity, smoking, inactivity, diabetes mellitus and previous diagnosis of arterial hypertension) have on arterial pressure, and to determine the prevalence of patients that have high blood pressure and hypertension but have not received drug-treatment for arterial hypertension.

Setting: 42 Spanish community pharmacies.

Method: Observational and descriptive study.

Development and validation of a Spanish language patient satisfaction questionnaire with drug dispensing.

Objective: To develop and validate a specific questionnaire about patient satisfaction with drug dispensing at Spanish community pharmacies.

Method: A self-administered semi-structured questionnaire was designed centered on the perception of the patients with the dispensing service. To validate this questionnaire, it was administered at Spanish community pharmacies, which voluntarily agreed to participate in the study for a period of 2 months (March and April 2006).
