  • Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials are being studied for their unique wave properties and enhanced nonlinear responses, which have significant technological implications.
  • This research examines how surface roughness affects ENZ substrates by using silicon carbide (SiC) with varying roughness levels, from a few to hundreds of nanometers.
  • Findings reveal that roughness in the nanometer range can disrupt the performance of ENZ substrates, while roughness in the hundreds of nanometers range actually improves the stability of ENZ bands compared to other types of polariton bands.

Article Synopsis
  • Tuberculosis (TB) is increasing among people with diabetes mellitus (DM), especially in lower-resource countries.
  • A trial in Mexico City tested TB preventive treatments using isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) in individuals with type 2 DM, involving 130 participants.
  • The study was halted due to safety concerns; while the overall adverse event rates were similar, more participants on INH faced serious liver issues, while those on RIF had severe gastrointestinal problems, suggesting that neither treatment is safe enough for routine use in this population.

Neurodegenerative processes encompass a large variety of diseases with different pathological patterns and clinical features, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Exposure to metals has been hypothesized to increase oxidative stress in brain cells leading to cell death and neurodegeneration. Neurotoxicity of metals has been demonstrated by several and experimental studies, and most probably, each metal has its specific pathway to trigger cell death.

A new method is proposed to tune the interferometric response of wavelength-based optical fiber sensors. Using the nanoparticle in situ synthesis (ISS) technique, it is possible to synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within a pre-existing polymeric thin film deposited at the end-face of an optical fiber. This post-process technique allows us to adjust the optical response of the device.

Improved therapies in multiple myeloma (MM) have forced a constant risk stratification update, first Durie-Salmon, then international scoring systems (ISS), next revised-ISS (RISS) including high-risk cytogenetic abnormalities (HRCAs) such as del(17p) and t(4;14), and now R2-ISS including 1q21 gain has been proposed. Predictive value of 1q21 gain by itself or in concurrence with other cytogenetic abnormalities is evaluated in 737 real-world plasma cell neoplasm (PCN) patients under current therapies. Ten-year progression-free survival (10y-PFS) rates for patients with 2, 3 and >3 copies of 1q21 were 72.

Dental biofilms are highly structured, complex multispecies communities that, if left untreated, lead to severe oral complications such as caries and periodontal diseases. Therefore, antibiofilm agents are often recommended for both preventive and therapeutic measures. However, biofilm management can be challenging due to the low sensitivity of biofilms to antimicrobial treatments.

The development of breast cancer (BC) is influenced by age, overweight, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus (DM), which are associated with hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress. High glucose concentration increases a metastatic phenotype in cultured breast cancer cells, promoting cell proliferation, reactive species production (ROS), epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), and expression of proteolytic enzymes. Our aim was to determine whether diabetes mellitus favor BC progression in mice and its association with changes in the content of ROS and glycolytic and proteolytic enzymes.

Cell functions and behavior are regulated not only by soluble (biochemical) signals but also by biophysical and mechanical cues within the cells' microenvironment. Thanks to the dynamical and complex cell machinery, cells are genuine and effective mechanotransducers translating mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals, which eventually alter multiple aspects of their own homeostasis. Given the dominant and classic biochemical-based views to explain biological processes, it could be challenging to elucidate the key role that mechanical parameters such as vibration, frequency, and force play in biology.
