Retinal Racemosal Hemangioma Associated with Intracranial Vascular Malformation (Wyburn -Mason Syndrome) - Case Report.

Purpose: To describe a case of Wyburn-Mason syndrome in a young child with initially declined treatment leading to delayed intervention.

Methodology: Case report.

Results: We report a 6-year-old boy with mild periocular trauma following a fall, who was incidentally found to have a retinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) associated with a brain AVM, indicative of Wyburn-Mason Syndrome.

Experience with the use of intravitreal bevacizumab in cases with type I retinopathy of prematurity in a Latin American country.

In retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) type I, the use of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB), which is an inhibitor of endothelial growth factor (VEGF), has become popular despite not being a therapy approved by regulatory agencies. However, IVB has shown positive effects in halting disease progression at lower costs compared to other anti-VEGF therapies (ranibizumab or aflibercept). In this report, we present the experience during the treatment with IVB of 102 Colombian children with ROP type I, with a success rate of 98% (100).

Ocular Chemical Burns: Epidemiological Trends in a Colombian Medical Center.

Ocular chemical burns are a significant cause of visual impairment. This study aims to characterize the ocular chemical burns in a southwestern Colombia referral center and identify associated factors with low vision. A retrospective cohort study was carried out based on the review of medical records of patients diagnosed with chemical eye burns who consulted the emergency ophthalmology service between January 2016 and December 2019.

Cryosectioning of Hydrogels as a Reliable Approach to Increase Yield and Further Tune Mechanical Properties.

Decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) hydrogels have emerged as promising materials in tissue engineering. The steps to produce dECM hydrogels containing the bioactive epitopes found in the native matrix are often laborious, including the initial harvesting and decellularization of the animal organ. Furthermore, resulting hydrogels often exhibit weak mechanical properties that require the use of additional crosslinkers such as genipin to truly simulate the mechanical properties of the desired study tissue.

Keratitis in patients with corneal foreign bodies: a cross-sectional study in Cali, Colombia.

Purposes: To describe the clinical characteristics and factors associated with keratitis in patients with corneal foreign bodies in Colombia.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on a clinical records review of patients who had corneal foreign bodies and were admitted to the emergency department between June 2018 and June 2019 in Cali, Colombia. The primary outcome was the presence of keratitis diagnosed based on clinical criteria.

The impact after 20 years of an early detection program for severe retinopathy of prematurity in a Latin American city.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of long-standing early detection program in the incidence and trends of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in Cali, Colombia.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of infants included in an ROP prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment program, from January 01, 2002, to December 31, 2021 (20 years). Infants with gestational age (GA) <37 weeks or birth weight (BW) <2000 g and those with known ROP risk factors were screened.

Epidemiology of Eye Cancer in Cali, Colombia: A 55-Year Study.

Purpose: To describe the epidemiology, incidence, mortality and survival of ocular cancer in Cali between 1962 and 2019.

Methods: Ecological population-based study analyzing data of incidence, mortality, and 5-years survival of malignant ocular tumors from the Populational Cancer Registry of Cali between 1962 and 2019.

Prevalence and risk factors for primary angle-closure disease spectrum: The Colombian glaucoma study.

Purpose: To estimate the prevalence and risk factors associated with the primary angle-closure disease spectrum in participants of the Colombian Glaucoma Study.

Methods: A cross-sectional study in subjects older than 50 years with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus or/and systemic hypertension was conducted in Colombia to estimate glaucoma prevalence. This study included 1749 patients and classified them using gonioscopy into either open-angle or primary angle-closure disease spectrum groups.

CD38 Deficiency Ameliorates Chronic Graft--Host Disease Murine Lupus a B-Cell-Dependent Mechanism.

The absence of the mouse cell surface receptor CD38 in mice suggests that this receptor acts as a positive regulator of inflammatory and autoimmune responses. Here, we report that, in the context of the chronic graft--host disease (cGVHD) lupus inducible model, the transfer of B6.C-H2bm12/KhEg(bm12) spleen cells into co-isogenic B6 mice causes milder lupus-like autoimmunity with lower levels of anti-ssDNA autoantibodies than the transfer of bm12 spleen cells into WT B6 mice.

Blood pressure, ocular perfusion pressure and open-angle glaucoma in patients with systemic hypertension.

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between blood pressure (BP), ocular perfusion pressure (OPP) and occurrence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) among patients with systemic hypertension.
