In order to determine the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis (BV) among women attending a family health Center and to evaluate the accuracy of Amsel's diagnostic procedure relative to Nugent scoring for diagnosing this condition, we obtained vaginal specimens from 100 women under 50 years attending a FPC from April to November of 2006. Women were enrolled consecutively on a schedule basis and were not selected by symptoms of genital infection. VB was diagnosed in 32% women, without significant differences by age (p=0,114).

We have implemented a complete active space configuration interaction method (CASCI) based on floating occupation molecular orbitals (FOMOs) at the ab initio level. The performance of this FOMO-CASCI method was investigated for potential applications in photochemistry and photodynamics. We found that FOMO-CASCI often represents a good approximation to the state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) method.

Aim: To evaluate in vivo the microscopic pulpal response in sound human premolar teeth subjected to vital tooth bleaching with a 38% hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) bleaching gel (Opalescence X-tra Boost) catalysed or not by a halogen light source.

Methodology: Twelve pairs of sound maxillary and/or mandibular premolar teeth from 12 to 18-year-old patients were selected and randomly assigned to the following experimental (n = 10) and control (n = 4) groups: group 1: bleaching gel + halogen light; group 2: bleaching gel; group 3: no treatment (control). The teeth were extracted 2-15 days after bleaching and were subjected to routine laboratory processing for histological analysis of the pulpal response under light microscopy.

Infection of the anorectal area with some subtypes of HPV virus results in local involvement that appears as warty, papillary, condylomatous lesions. Patients exposed to high-risk HPV types, such as HPV-16, -18, and -31, are at risk for developing high-grade dysplasias or carcinomas. We reviewed 15 years (1991 - 2006) of patient records from our proctological unit and STD center and found 1,122 patients affected by anorectal condylomatosis.

Objective: To describe the role of health care providers in the delayed diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) among the adult population in a city in Colombia.

Methods: A case study of PTB diagnosis among adults in the city of Medellín, Colombia, in 2007. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with 19 patients (11 with early diagnosis and 8 with late diagnosis), from medical records, and by a survey of PTB-related knowledge and practices among 89 doctors and nurses at health care clinics.

Mechanical damage of polymers is often a destructive and irreversible process. However, desirable outcomes may be achieved by controlling the location of chain cleavage events through careful design and incorporation of mechanically active chemical moieties known as mechanophores. It is possible that mechanophores can be used to generate reactive intermediates that can autopolymerize or cross-link, thus healing mechanically induced damage.

The objective of this study was to describe the nonfatal unintentional injuries among children aged <15 years treated in four emergency departments (EDs) in Nicaragua. The 2004 Injury Surveillance System included all cases of injuries that attended the four hospital EDs (n = 37,577). We analysed the records of 13,426 children aged <15 years who sustained nonfatal unintentional injuries.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between GHRH-induced GH secretion in obese premenopausal women and cardiovascular risk markers or insulin resistance. Premenopausal obese women, aged 35-52 years, were studied. GH secretion, IGF-I, serum cardiovascular risk markers, insulin, leptin, mid-waist and hip circumference, total body fat, and truncal fat were measured.

We introduce a geminal-augmented multiconfigurational self-consistent field method for describing electron correlation effects. The approach is based on variational optimization of a MCSCF-type wave function augmented by a single geminal. This wave function is able to account for some dynamic correlation without explicit excitations to virtual molecular orbitals.

In 2002, an innovative neutron time-of-flight facility started operation at CERN: n_TOF. The main characteristics that make the new facility unique are the high instantaneous neutron flux, high resolution and wide energy range. Combined with state-of-the-art detectors and data acquisition system, these features have allowed to collect high accuracy neutron cross-section data on a variety of isotopes, many of which radioactive, of interest for Nuclear Astrophysics and for applications to advanced reactor technologies.

Since the seminal contribution of Roothaan, quantum chemistry methods are traditionally expressed using finite basis sets comprised of smooth and continuous functions (atom-centered Gaussians) to describe the electronic degrees of freedom. Although this approach proved quite powerful, it is not well suited for large basis sets because of linear dependence problems and ill conditioning of the required matrices. The finite element method (FEM), on the other hand, is a powerful numerical method whose convergence is also guaranteed by variational principles and can be achieved systematically by increasing the number of degrees of freedom and/or the polynomial order of the shape functions.

Reversible photoswitching fluorescent proteins can be photoswitched between fluorescent and nonfluorescent states by different irradiation regimes. Accumulating spectroscopic and crystallographic evidence suggest a correlated change in protonation state and methine bridge isomerism of the chromophore. The anion can decay by photoisomerization of either of the methine bonds, but only one channel can act as a switch.

A case-control study was conducted between December 2005 and August 2006 in London (1) to estimate the strength of association between early ovariohysterectomy (spaying) and urinary incontinence (sphincter mechanism incompetence), (2) to identify other risk factors for incontinence, and (3) to assess any implications of incontinence on the owner-pet relationship. Cases were defined as bitches that developed incontinence after spaying and were treated, and the controls comprised continent spayed bitches. Questionnaires from 202 cases were compared to 168 controls, and analysed using multivariable logistic regression.

We report a link between Cullin5 (Cul5) E3 ubiquitin ligase and the heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) chaperone complex. Hsp90 participates in the folding of its client proteins into their functional conformation. Many Hsp90 clients have been reported to be aberrantly expressed in a number of cancers.

We have implemented multi-state second-order perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2) in the ab initio multiple spawning (AIMS) method for first-principles molecular dynamics including nonadiabatic effects. The nonadiabatic couplings between states are calculated numerically using an efficient method which requires only two extra energy calculations per time step. As a representative example, we carry out AIMS-MSPT2 calculations of the excited state dynamics of ethylene.

We demonstrate that a video gaming machine containing two consumer graphical cards can outpace a state-of-the-art quad-core processor workstation by a factor of more than 180× in Hartree-Fock energy + gradient calculations. Such performance makes it possible to run large scale Hartree-Fock and Density Functional Theory calculations, which typically require hundreds of traditional processor cores, on a single workstation. Benchmark Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations are performed on two molecular systems using the 3-21G basis set - a hydronium ion solvated by 30 waters (94 atoms, 405 basis functions) and an aspartic acid molecule solvated by 147 waters (457 atoms, 2014 basis functions).
