The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of As, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Tl, V, and Zn, by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in the urine of two groups of patients with two different types of metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip prostheses (ASR DePuy, group A, 25 patients; total Met-Met System Lima, group B, 28 patients). The determination of metals reflected a steady-state release (group A: 9 years after surgery and group B: 6 years after surgery). The results obtained confirmed the increase of Co and Cr urinary levels in both group when compared with the reference values for the general population adopted by the Italian Society of Reference Values (SIVR).

Aim: To describe the features of silicosis in quartz conglomerate workers in North-Eastern Italy.
Methods: Active search of pneumoconiosis was performed in 11 companies of North-Eastern Italy involved in the fabrication of quartz conglomerate countertops.
Residual stresses are well-known companions of all glassy materials. They affect and, in many cases, even strongly modify important material properties like the mechanical response and the optical transparency. The mechanisms through which stresses affect such properties are, in many cases, still under study, and their full understanding can pave the way to a full exploitation of stress as a primary control parameter.

The development of dressings with intrinsic wound healing activity and/or releasing bioactive compounds may help with addressing such an issue. In this study, hyaluronic acid (HA) at different percentages (1-35%) was used to modify chitosan (CS) biological and physico-chemical properties in order to obtain 2D-matrices able to promote healing and protect from infection.

As a treatment photobiomodulation (PBM) has demonstrated positive effects in terms of the maintenance of muscle activation and trophism. Wistar rats were divided into five groups: control, injury, injury + PBMn (irradiation over injured nerve), injury + PBMm (irradiation over affected muscle) and injury + PBMnm (irradiation over nerve and muscle).

Cost-effectiveness analysis is essential in health decision making. Several countries use it as synthesis of evidence to incorporate health technologies. The protease inhibitors (PI) boceprevir (BOC) and telaprevir (TVR) are indicated for chronic hepatitis C treatment and were incorporated in guidelines worldwide.

In NANoREG project, aim of the study was to identify potential hazards of pyrogenic SAS nanomaterial NM-203 by a 90-day oral toxicity study (OECD test guideline 408). Adult Sprague-Dawley rats of both sexes were orally treated with 0, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 mg SAS/kg bw per day; dose levels were selected to be as close as possible to E551 dietary exposure.

This study investigated the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on undifferentiated and differentiation-induced C2C12 myoblasts cultivated in different concentrations of M1 phenotype macrophage-conditioned media of J774 cells (MCM1) also submitted to PBM using the same irradiation parameters. Irradiation was performed once with low-level laser (780 nm, 70 mW, 1 J) and was evaluated cell viability, proliferation and differentiation, nitric oxide (NO) synthesis and IL-6 and TNF-α protein levels 24 and 48 h after C2C12 irradiation.

Attributes favourable for applying polarised Raman spectroscopy are the orthogonal axes of these single crystals and their size, i.e.

In this context, we developed a chemoinformatic platform that allows the analysis of the structure and selectivity profile of known CAIs reported in literature, with the aim of identifying structural motifs connected to ligand selectivity, thus providing useful guidelines for the design of novel ligands selective for the desired hCA isoform. The platform is able to perform ultrafast structure and selectivity analyses through ligand fingerprint similarity, with no need of structural information about the target receptor and ligands' binding mode.

However, there is no specific information available regarding whether Se can affect the anatomical structure and photosynthetic rates of plants under Cd stress. To address questions related to Se-protective responses under Cd stress, we evaluated the structural and ultrastructural aspects, photosynthetic rates and growth of tomato cv.

Specialized analytical tools requiring technical expertise are available. However, consolidated and multi-faceted tools that are easy to use for life scientists is highly needed and currently lacking.

Lipase-immobilized nanomaterials with high activity and stable reusability would have a great impact in different fields. However, developing such materials has proven to be challenging. Herein, polymer (pAcDED)-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) displaying long alkyl chains, either octyl (C8) or hexadecyl (C16), have been prepared and used for immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase.

The membrane with the lower amount of additive displayed the highest water affinity and the highest conductivity, indicating that a too-high dose of additive can be detrimental for these particular properties.

One of the key factors in their performance as electrolytes, as far as charge transport is concerned, is their proton conductivity. Noting the success of water-containing electrolytes and recognising faster proton mobility than structural relaxation (via mechanisms such as Grotthuss) as their advantage, such an advantage is envisaged for PILs and in some cases deduced.
