Ribotoxin-like proteins (RL-Ps) represent a novel specific ribonuclease family found in edible mushrooms and are able to inhibit protein synthesis. Here, we report the characterization and cytotoxic effects of four novel RL-Ps, named eryngitins, isolated from fruiting bodies of the king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii). These proteins induced formation of α-fragment from rabbit ribosomes, characteristic of their enzymatic action.

The SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) is essential for virus replication, therefore it is a promising drug target. Here we present a surface plasmon resonance approach to study the interaction of RdRp with drugs in real time. We monitored the effect of favipiravir, ribavirin, sofosbuvir triphosphate PSI-7409 and suramin on RdRp binding to RNA immobilized on the chip.

Ostreolysin A6 (OlyA6) is a protein produced by the oyster mushroom (). It binds to membrane sphingomyelin/cholesterol domains, and together with its protein partner, pleurotolysin B (PlyB), it forms 13-meric transmembrane pore complexes. Further, OlyA6 binds 1000 times more strongly to the insect-specific membrane sphingolipid, ceramide phosphoethanolamine (CPE).
