Background: People with "Differences of Sex Development" (DSD) require comprehensive, specialised, and individualised medical and psychological care. This is often perceived as inadequate by those affected. Therefore, the German Federal Ministry of Health funded the project DSDCare which aimed to improve the quality of care for people with DSD over the lifespan in Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • * Sites with warmer, wetter conditions and more species generally saw increased biomass, while arid, species-poor areas experienced declines, alongside notable changes in seasonal plant growth patterns.
  • * Factors like grazing and nutrient input didn't consistently predict biomass changes, indicating that grasslands are undergoing substantial transformations that could affect food security, biodiversity, and carbon storage, particularly in dry regions.

Basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) transcription factors TFEB/TFE3 and HLH-30 are key regulators of autophagy induction and lysosomal biogenesis in mammals and C. elegans, respectively. While much is known about the regulation of TFEB/TFE3, how HLH-30 subcellular dynamics and transactivation are modulated are yet poorly understood.

Little is currently known about how climate modulates the relationship between plant diversity and soil organic carbon and the mechanisms involved. Yet, this knowledge is of crucial importance in times of climate change and biodiversity loss. Here, we show that plant diversity is positively correlated with soil carbon content and soil carbon-to-nitrogen ratio across 84 grasslands on six continents that span wide climate gradients.

Eutrophication usually impacts grassland biodiversity, community composition, and biomass production, but its impact on the stability of these community aspects is unclear. One challenge is that stability has many facets that can be tightly correlated (low dimensionality) or highly disparate (high dimensionality). Using standardized experiments in 55 grassland sites from a globally distributed experiment (NutNet), we quantify the effects of nutrient addition on five facets of stability (temporal invariability, resistance during dry and wet growing seasons, recovery after dry and wet growing seasons), measured on three community aspects (aboveground biomass, community composition, and species richness).

Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) youth are at higher risk of isolation and depression than their heterosexual peers. Having access to tailored mental health resources is a documented concern for rural living LGBTQ+ youth. Social media provides access to connections to a broader and like-minded community of peers, but it also is a vehicle for negative interactions.

There are many security challenges in IoT, especially related to the authentication of restricted devices in long-distance and low-throughput networks. Problems such as impersonation, privacy issues, and excessive battery usage are some of the existing problems evaluated through the threat modeling of this work. A formal assessment of security solutions for their compliance in addressing such threats is desirable.

Species range contractions both contribute to, and result from, biological annihilation, yet do not receive the same attention as extinctions. Range contractions can lead to marked impacts on populations but are usually characterized only by reduction in extent of range. For effective conservation, it is critical to recognize that not all range contractions are the same.

Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM; ie, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and otherwise queer) young adults experience disparities in depression and other internalizing psychopathology. Although social media use is widespread and SGM people have more social media accounts and are more socially active on them than non-SGM individuals, few studies have examined the impact of social media on depression in this group.

Objective: The PRIDE iM study will be the first longitudinal, mixed methods research conducted to determine the impact of social media interactions and behaviors as pathways to depressive symptoms among SGM young adults living in the United States.

The Cordella pulmonary artery (PA) pressure sensor (Endotronix, Inc) is an investigational, wireless, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) sensor that allows remote monitoring of PA pressures. Understanding the implantation procedure and technical nuances is key to safe, efficient, and effective implantation to allow for successful use of the PA pressure sensor over the long term. We provide a summary of the implantation procedure and present a series of cases detailing the Cordella PA pressure sensor implantation in the United States and Europe.

Maintaining reproductive seasonality can be vital to the fitness of wild animals. Certain species, however, may display aseasonal reproduction and may produce multiple yearly litters when maintained in captivity. Wild fennec foxes (Vulpes zerda), for example, produce a single litter in March or April although their reproductive behaviors are reportedly variable in captivity.

The transcription factor EB (TFEB) regulates energy homeostasis and cellular response to a wide variety of stress conditions, including nutrient deprivation, oxidative stress, organelle damage, and pathogens. Here we identify S401 as a novel phosphorylation site within the TFEB proline-rich domain. Phosphorylation of S401 increases significantly in response to oxidative stress, UVC light, growth factors, and LPS, whereas this increase is prevented by p38 MAPK inhibition or depletion, revealing a new role for p38 MAPK in TFEB regulation.

Background/objective: In recent years, treatment of heart failure patients has proved to benefit from implantation of pressure sensors in the pulmonary artery (PA). While longitudinal measurement of PA pressure profoundly improves a clinician's ability to manage HF, the full potential of central venous pressure as a clinical tool has yet to be unlocked. Central venous pressure serves as a surrogate for the right atrial pressure, and thus could potentially predict a wider range of heart failure conditions.

Global change drivers, such as anthropogenic nutrient inputs, are increasing globally. Nutrient deposition simultaneously alters plant biodiversity, species composition and ecosystem processes like aboveground biomass production. These changes are underpinned by species extinction, colonisation and shifting relative abundance.

Background: People who exchange sex for money, favors, goods or services, combat higher risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Understanding barriers to STD and HIV related healthcare from the perspective of this stigmatized and marginalized community may improve access to sexual health services including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).  METHODS: We used community-partnered participatory and qualitative methods to conduct anonymous one-on-one interviews with people who exchange sex to understand their perspectives and experiences related to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV acquisition.

Sorghum is an important worldwide source of food, feed and fibres. Like most plants, it forms mutualistic symbioses with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), but the nutritional basis of mycorrhiza-responsiveness is largely unknown. Here, we investigated the transcriptional and physiological responses of sorghum to two different AMF species, Rhizophagus irregularis and Funneliformis mosseae, under 16 different conditions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supply.

Lower renewable energy generator prices are leading people to install solar panels to reduce their electricity bills or, in some cases, even sell the surplus generated energy to the grid and earn credits from the grid operator. Generally, they are limited to trading the energy they generate with the grid company, which has a dominant role in price determination. Decentralized energy markets might increase both market competitiveness and incentive to further people's adoption of renewable energy, reducing security vulnerabilities and improving resiliency.

TFEB (transcription factor EB) and TFE3 (transcription factor binding to IGHM enhancer 3) orchestrate the cellular response to a variety of stressors, including nutrient deprivation, oxidative stress and pathogens. Here we describe a novel interaction of TFEB and TFE3 with the FAcilitates Chromatin Transcription (FACT) complex, a heterodimeric histone chaperone consisting of SSRP1 and SUPT16H that mediates nucleosome disassembly and assembly, thus facilitating transcription. Extracellular stimuli, such as nutrient deprivation or oxidative stress, induce nuclear translocation and activation of TFEB and TFE3, which then associate with the FACT complex to regulate stress-induced gene transcription.

Transmembrane glycoprotein NMB (GPNMB) is a prognostic marker of poor outcome in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Glembatumumab Vedotin, an antibody drug conjugate targeting GPNMB, exhibits variable efficacy against GPNMB-positive metastatic TNBC as a single agent. We show that GPNMB levels increase in response to standard-of-care and experimental therapies for multiple breast cancer subtypes.

Nutrient enrichment can simultaneously increase and destabilise plant biomass production, with co-limitation by multiple nutrients potentially intensifying these effects. Here, we test how factorial additions of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium with essential nutrients (K+) affect the stability (mean/standard deviation) of aboveground biomass in 34 grasslands over 7 years. Destabilisation with fertilisation was prevalent but was driven by single nutrients, not synergistic nutrient interactions.
