Background: Few reports have addressed the change in renal replacement therapy (RRT) management in the Intensive care Units (ICUs) over the years in western countries. This study aims to assess the trend of dialytic practice in a 4.5-million population-based study of the northwest of Italy.

We investigated the effects of petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) soil contamination, resulting from a real diesel oil pipeline spill, on the growth of Lupinus albus and Raphanus sativus plants. These species are widely cultivated for food purposes and have not been previously tested in soils affected by oil spills.

So far no study in large population areas have examined the incidence, clinical profile and outcome of acute kidney injury (AKI)-MALA patients admitted in intensive care units (ICUs) and treated by renal replacement therapy (MALA-RRT).
Methods: Retrospective analysis over a 6-year period (2010-2015) in Piedmont and Aosta Valley regions (5,305,940 inhabitants, 141,174 diabetics treated with metformin) of all MALA-RRT cases.

Exposure to air pollution is associated with increased morbidity from cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, respiratory and allergic diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate allergic diseases in 111 traffic wardens compared to a control group of 101 administrative employees. All participating subjects underwent a physical examination, in which a complete medical history was taken and a dedicated allergological questionnaire administered.

Methods: A total of 1,600 consecutive ELRP patients were recorded with a 2-year follow-up. In 778 patients, a 5-year follow-up was available.
The presence of ophiolites in areas of Basilicata, where there have been reports of mesothelioma in farmers, is known. This study evaluates the increased risk of exposure to tremolite in carrying out agricultural activities. Cases of mesothelioma occurred in farmers with unknown exposure to asbestos have been selected and assessed the employment in areas contaminated by tremolite.

The study aims to assess the risk of exposure to asbestos in the building workers in these areas through environmental sampling near sites for implementation of safety of roads built on serpentinite rocks and personal sampling in a group of persons who work in the building industry and a group of residents engaged in activities without contact with the ground. Near road sites was found the presence of airborne tremolite in 66% of environmental samples with peaks up to 31 ff/l.

During the activities of the Apulia Regional Operative Center (COR Puglia), pertaining to the National Registry of Mesothelioma (ReNaM), there was reported a case of malignant mesothelioma occurred in a male of 66 years old. The case we bring to the attention is about an university professor of chemistry who, since the early '70s, has conducted several studies on the physico-chemical properties of some metals, particulary in the field of thermochemical treatments of superficial hardening of steel for greater wear resistance, using a laboratory with ovens and asbestos-containing materials and consumables. In 2011, after almost 40 years, the subject comes to the attention of the Apulia Regional Operative Center, with histologic and immunohistochemical diagnosis of epithelioid mesothelioma, after completing the diagnostic procedure in a thoracic surgery ward, for the assessment and treatment of a right pleural effusion revealed during health checks.

This study evaluates the skin reactions after fish handling manipulation in a group of fishmongers. 60 questionnaires were administered for information on seniority, use of IPDs, training received, work injuries and general health.

Patients And Methods: From January 2004 to January 2009, 86 patients who were affected with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) underwent retroperitoneal LP. In all operations, a four-port, balloon-dissecting, retroperitoneal approach was used and a simple "personalized" modification of the conventional Anderson-Hynes technique consisting of an approaching and stabilizing stitch made between the renal pelvis and proximal ureter.
Introduction. Vascular access recirculation (AR), which is often unacknowledged, remains an important cause of inadequate dialytic dose. The glucose infusion test (GIT) is a new method for detecting and quantifying AR.

Urban air pollution is associated with an increased incidence of allergic respiratory diseases. The aim of this study is to assess the occupational exposure to urban pollution through biological monitoring of PAHs and CO airborne levels in 122 traffic wardens in Bari, Italy and to investigate sensitization to inhaled allergens in a subgroup of workers. After filling in a questionnaire on lifestyle habits and occupational history, a medical examination, spirometry were carried out and blood samples were taken; the measurement of exhaled CO and urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-HOP) was performed and data on the air quality of Bari Municipality were obtained.

Traditional risk factors do not explain the high prevalence of CVD in this population, and other non-traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk markers have now been described. Therefore, the potential relationship between CVD and phenotypic and genotypic risk markers was investigated prospectively in incident dialysis patients cohort.

Methods: The urologist assisted an experienced laparoscopic surgeon for 20 extraperitoneal radical prostatectomies. During this time, he modified his technique of performing open radical retropubic prostatectomy to facilitate the acquisition of the laparoscopic techniques.
Renal transplantation in patients who have undergone coronary revascularization remains a matter of concern, few experiences have been reported in literature. From January 1997 to March 2003, 23 previously revascularized patients underwent renal transplants from cadaveric donors. We analyzed patient survival and cardiac events in this group of patients (group A) versus a similar population of 38 revascularized patients who were still on dialysis (group B) on the active waiting list (awl).

In end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the effects of hemodialysis on QT interval are diverse and the influence of autonomic neuropathy has yet to be clearly defined.
Methods: Sixty-nine ERSD patients (age 64 +/- 14) were studied.
Background: Late referral (LR) to the nephrologist of patients with progressing chronic kidney disease (CKD) has numerous deleterious effects and is observed in many countries. The contributing factors associated with LR are controversial and poorly defined. We hypothesized that these factors might be better identified by analysing patients starting dialysis in three distinct European countries within the same area.

Methods: All patients were treated in a limited care and home haemodialysis unit with a stable caregiver team (November 1998-November 2002).
Background: Guidelines for treating anemia in dialysis patients accept, as high-end range of serum ferritin useful to optimize erythropoietin therapy, values high as 500 to 900 microg/L, on the hypothesis that ferritin might be not representative of iron overload.
Methods: A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) was used to make direct noninvasive magnetic measurements of nonheme hepatic iron content in 40 dialysis patients treated with intravenous iron, and liver iron content was compared with biochemical markers of iron status.
Results: Only 12/40 (30%) patients showed normal hepatic iron content (SQUID <400 microg/g), while 32.
Background: The actual prevalence and the clinical relevance of gene mutations of HFE (which are linked to hemochromatosis) have not yet been established in patients on chronic dialysis. On the basis of theoretical premises, it could be hypothesized that these genetic determinants might influence the response to iron intake and the susceptibility for iron overload in patients in parenteral iron therapy. Furthermore, carriers for these mutations might be prone to develop sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda and cardiovascular events.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on all cases (188 patients) with RRT follow-up >/=20 years in Piemonte, northern Italy (4 350 000 inhabitants, 22 dialysis centres). Study included revision of clinical charts and assessment of functional (Karnofsky scale, Ks) and nutritional status (subjective global assessment, SGA).
Unlabelled: Many patients with chronic renal failure experience profound hypotension during hemodialysis. This phenomenon may be caused by hypovolemia, autonomic or cardiac dysfunction, vascular resistance defects or vasoactive substances such as nitric oxide or adrenomedullin. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of autonomic neuropathy on the occurrence of hypotension during hemodialysis.
