Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) is generally an understudied disease, largely because most molecular and clinical studies of mesothelioma have been conducted in patients with the more common malignant pleural mesothelioma. We present the case of a 45-year-old male that initially presented with abdominal discomfort and ascites. Diagnostic workup revealed advanced DMPM.

The strategy for treating prostate cancer patients depends on the assessment of disease extent, assessment of the risk of disease relapse, assessment of life expectancy, comorbidities, affinities and life-style. Since the activity and survival of prostate cancer cells is at least initially dependent on androgen stimulation, hormonal therapy is one of the several standard treatment modalities. Hormonal therapy is aimed at decreasing this androgen stimulation either by lowering androgen production or by blocking receptor binding.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the incidence of multiple primary malignancies in patients at the University of Zagreb's oncology department from 2003 to 2009, finding an incidence rate of 2.4%.
  • Among the 103 patients, 97 had two primary tumors and 6 had three, with a majority being metachronous (83 cases) rather than synchronous (20 cases).
  • The findings indicate that females were more affected than males, often diagnosed at a younger age, with common tumor combinations differing by gender, suggesting increasing rates due to better screening and treatment advances.

Tamoxifen is considered to be the gold standard in hormonotherapy of patients with estrogen dependent breast cancer (estrogen receptor (ER) and/or progesterone receptor (PR) positive tumors). However, because tamoxifen's beneficial effects diminish after 5 years of use in adjuvant setting and because of its partial agonistic effects and its resistence to tamoxifen in some breast carcinoma, there is a need for new antiestrogens. One of these antiestrogens is fulvestrant which, unlike tamoxifen, has no partial agonistic effects.
