Rehabilitation of Alien Hand Syndrome Complicated by Contralateral Limb Apraxia.

A previously independent 66-yr-old right-handed man presented with right-sided weakness, preferring the lower limbs with additional impaired gait and dysarthria for 1-day duration. Imaging found a large left hemispheric anterior cerebral artery ischemic infarction with multiple lacunar infarcts. He exhibited frontal, callosal, and posterior variants of alien hand syndrome, which impeded activities of daily living.

Prevalence of Bacterial Contamination of Casting Material in a Pediatric Population.

Surgical site infection is a relatively common and devastating complication following pediatric orthopedic surgery. Many infections have been determined to be the result of settled airborne particles on surgical equipment and the sterile field. Fiberglass casts are commonly used orthopedic fixation devices before and after surgery; however, fiberglass casting material is expelled during the removal process and represents an uninvestigated area for the possibility of cast saw dust as a source of airborne bacterial contamination in an operating room setting.

Resident Education of Ultrasound-Guided Procedures: A Homemade Practice Model Pilot Study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate an agar model that could be used to train physicians to perform ultrasound-guided procedures. Eleven (N = 11) physical medicine and rehabilitation residents volunteered to be subjects. All subjects completed a questionnaire about their experience and comfort with ultrasound-guided procedures.

Objective: To determine whether female athletes in middle school and high school with a first-time, sports-related concussion remained symptomatic longer than their male counterparts.

The value of radiographic screening for metallic particles in the equine foot and size of related artifacts on low-field MRI.

Magnetic susceptibility artifacts as a result of metal debris from shoeing are a common problem in magnetic resonance imaging of the equine foot. Our purpose was to determine the suitability of radiography as a screening tool for the presence and location of metallic particles in the equine foot and to predict the size of the resultant magnetic susceptibility artifact. Radiography had 100% sensitivity for detection of metal particles > or = 1 mm diameter.

Magnetic resonance imaging findings of equine solar penetration wounds.

The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features, signalment, clinical history and outcome of 55 horses with a penetrating sole injury were evaluated. Our aim was to describe MR imaging findings within the hoof capsule, assess the utility of the technique and give recommendations for the optimal MR imaging protocol to evaluate such injuries.
