Scope: Excessive activation of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome contributes to chronic inflammation. Thus, targeting NLRP3 inflammasome activation by anthocyanins may prevent inflammatory diseases. Therefore, the present study determines the influence of a black carrot extract (BCE) with high amounts of acylated anthocyanins and their related phenolic acids on the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Inflammasomes are multi-protein complexes, which are formed in response to tissue injury, infections, and metabolic stress. However, aberrant inflammasome activation has been linked to several inflammatory diseases. Anthocyanins have been reported to attenuate NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation, but the influence of grape/blueberry anthocyanins and especially their gut-derived metabolites on NLRP3 inflammasome activation in human monocytes remains unclear.

Fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) is a serious bleeding condition mostly caused by the reaction between maternal anti-HPA-1a antibodies and fetal platelets. This reaction leads to Fc-dependent platelet phagocytosis. Although several serological methods have been developed to identify maternal antibodies, a reliable laboratory parameter as a prognostic tool for FNAIT severity is still lacking.
