Article Synopsis
  • Procalcitonin (PCT) has been shown to safely reduce antibiotic use in lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in controlled studies, but real-life effectiveness needed investigation.
  • An observational study involving 1,759 patients across multiple countries found that 86.4% had LRTI diagnoses, with a 68.2% compliance to the PCT algorithm, leading to a significant reduction in antibiotic therapy duration (5.9 vs. 7.4 days when the algorithm was followed).
  • Despite decreased antibiotic use, there was no increase in adverse effects within 30 days, supporting the PCT algorithm's safety and efficacy in a real-world setting.

Introduction: Phenytoin is a drug used for the treatment of different types of seizures. Its variable pharmacokinetics, mainly a consequence of variable bioavailability, saturable protein binding and saturable hepatic metabolism, predisposes the drug to therapeutic drug monitoring. Several methods to analyze the drug in serum exist with immunoassays being the method of choice for routine measurements.
