Article Synopsis
  • A nodding syndrome epidemic emerged in northern Uganda around 2007, prompting an evaluation of community-directed treatment with ivermectin and river larviciding on epilepsy rates post-intervention.
  • A survey comparing data from 2012 and 2017 involved 2,138 individuals and revealed significant decreases in the cumulative incidence of all epilepsy forms, including nodding syndrome, despite no significant change in prevalence.
  • Findings indicate a growing link between Onchocerca volvulus infection and epilepsy, highlighting a shift in the median age of affected individuals from 13.5 years in 2012 to 18 years in 2017.
