Survival analysis methods are increasingly used in dental research to measure risk of tooth eruption and caries as well as life spans of amalgam restorations. Analyses have been extended to account for lack of independence in the data, which arises from the clustering of observations within units such as tooth-surfaces, teeth and subjects. There are various analytical strategies and modelling approaches now available to us in dealing with clustered dental data.

Chorismate lyase (CL) removes the pyruvyl group from chorismate to provide 4-hydroxybenzoate (4HB) for the ubiquinone pathway. The structure of the C73G mutant of putidaredoxin (Pdx), the Fe(2)S(2) ferredoxin that supplies electrons to cytochrome CYP101 (p450cam) for camphor oxidation, is reported at 1.9 A resolution in a C2 crystal form. The structure was solved by single-wavelength iron anomalous diffraction, which yielded electron density above the 2sigma level for over 97% of the non-H atoms in the protein.

Alanine dehydrogenase (AlaDH) from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Archaeoglobus fulgidus is a dimer of 35 kDa chains. The archaeal enzyme appears to represent a new class of AlaDH that is not homologous to bacterial AlaDH enzymes, but has close evolutionary links to the broad ornithine cyclodeaminase/micro-crystallin family, which includes human thyroid hormone binding protein, which has 30% sequence identity to the A. fulgidus gene.

The overall biochemical reaction catalyzed by the PabB and PabC components of PABA synthase is: chorismate(aq)+ammonia(aq)=4-aminobenzoate(aq)+pyruvate(aq)+H(2)O(l). This reaction can be divided into two partial reactions involving the intermediate 4-amino-4-deoxychorismate (ADC): chorismate(aq)+ammonia(aq)=ADC(aq)+H(2)O(l) and ADC(aq)=4-aminobenzoate(aq)+pyruvate(aq).

Basic Research Design: The multilevel Cox proportional hazard model is illustrated using amalgam restoration data comprising three levels: repeated restorations at level-1, teeth at level-2, and subjects at level-3. The outcome was duration of amalgam restoration survival.
