Background: Leishmaniases are neglected diseases transmitted by sand flies. They disproportionately affect vulnerable groups globally. Understanding the relationship between climate and disease transmission allows the development of relevant decision-support tools for public health policy and surveillance.

Unlabelled: The Countdown is an international research collaboration that independently monitors the evolving impacts of climate change on health, and the emerging health opportunities of climate action. In its eighth iteration, this 2023 report draws on the expertise of 114 scientists and health practitioners from 52 research institutions and UN agencies worldwide to provide its most comprehensive assessment yet. In 2022, the Countdown warned that people’s health is at the mercy of fossil fuels and stressed the transformative opportunity of jointly tackling the concurrent climate change, energy, cost-of-living, and health crises for human health and wellbeing.

Background: Although anti-SARS-CoV-2 humoral immune responses and epidemiology have been extensively studied, data gaps remain for certain populations such as indigenous people or children especially in low- and middle-income countries. To address this gap, we evaluated SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and humoral immunity towards the parental B.1 strain, local SARS-CoV-2 variants, and endemic coronaviruses in children from Colombia from March to April 2021.

Leptospirosis, a global zoonotic disease, is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, including Fiji where it's endemic with year-round cases and sporadic outbreaks coinciding with heavy rainfall. However, the relationship between climate and leptospirosis has not yet been well characterised in the South Pacific. In this study, we quantify the effects of different climatic indicators on leptospirosis incidence in Fiji, using a time series of weekly case data between 2006 and 2017.

Article Synopsis
  • Leptospirosis is a disease that spreads from animals to humans, with significant occurrences in northeastern Argentina, especially after flooding related to El Niño.
  • This study focused on predicting outbreaks by analyzing the impact of El Niño, rainfall, and river levels on leptospirosis cases from 2009 to 2020 using Bayesian modeling.
  • The findings indicated that models based on climatic conditions accurately predicted 89% of outbreaks, suggesting that hydrometeorological data could enhance early warning systems for managing leptospirosis risks in the region.

Unlabelled: The 2022 report of the Countdown is published as the world confronts profound and concurrent systemic shocks. Countries and health systems continue to contend with the health, social, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a persistent fossil fuel overdependence has pushed the world into global energy and cost-of-living crises. As these crises unfold, climate change escalates unabated.

Article Synopsis
  • A study calculated the total number of Lyme borreliosis (LB) cases in Germany for 2019, revealing there were 128,177 diagnosed cases, resulting in an incidence rate of 179 per 100,000 insured individuals.
  • There were significant regional variations in incidence rates, with some districts reporting rates as high as 646 per 100,000, particularly in areas with more forests and agricultural land.
  • The research highlighted considerable under-reporting, showing a discrepancy between claimed cases and official reports, suggesting the need for targeted public health interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • Ecuador lacks a chronic kidney disease (CKD) registry, complicating the assessment of CKD's growing burden due to rising diabetes, hypertension, and an aging population.
  • Research found 17,484 dialysis patients in 2018, with increasing hospitalization needs and long waiting lists due to limited access and geographic disparities in nephrologist availability.
  • Establishing a patient registry is crucial for better policy making, resource allocation, and enhancing prevention efforts to address the escalating CKD public health crisis in the country.
