Novel ionic liquid catalysts comprising terephthalate anions are capable of promoting the neutral hydrolysis of relatively large flake sizes of poly(ethylene terephthalate) at 0.5 mol% loading (200 °C, 4 h, 94% yield) without either attendant product inhibition or product contamination by protonated catalyst. Catalysts with large, lipophilic phosphonium cations outperform more polar variants.

Aging is the biggest risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD), suggesting that age-related changes in the brain promote dopamine neuron vulnerability. It is unclear, however, whether aging alone is sufficient to cause significant dopamine neuron loss and if so, how this intersects with PD-related neurodegeneration. Here, through examining a large collection of naturally varying strains, we find a strong relationship between life span and age-related dopamine neuron loss.

Neutrophils are capable of extruding neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), a network of granule proteins and chromatin material, upon activation. NETs provide defense against extracellular microbes, but histones in NETs can also induce cytotoxicity and activate inflammatory responses. Recovery from pneumococcal (Spn) pneumonia induces development of tissue resident memory CD4 T cells, B cells, and antibody secreting plasma cells in experienced lungs. These tissue resident lymphocytes confer protection against subsequent lethal challenge by serotype mismatched Spn (termed as heterotypic immunity). While traditional flow cytometry and gating strategies support premeditated identification of cells using a limited set of markers, discovery of novel tissue resident lymphocytes necessitates stable platforms that can handle larger sets of phenotypic markers and lends itself to unbiased clustering approaches.

The G2019S mutation in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) causes familial Parkinson's disease (PD) and is also found in a subset of idiopathic cases. Prior studies in and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived dopamine neurons uncovered a pronounced effect of G2019S LRRK2 on mRNA translation. It was previously reported that G2019S LRRK2 promotes translation of mRNAs with complex 5' untranslated region (UTR) secondary structure, resulting in increased expression of calcium channels and dysregulated calcium homeostasis in human dopamine neurons.
