Objective: To assess whether differences in safety profiles between nevirapine (NVP) and efavirenz (EFV), as observed in the 2NN study, translated into differences in 'health related quality of life' (HRQoL).
Design: A sub-study of the 2NN study, with antiretroviral-naive patients randomly allocated to NVP (once or twice daily), EFV or NVP+EFV, in addition to stavudine and lamivudine.
Methods: Comparing differences in changes of HRQoL over 48 weeks as measured with the Medical Outcomes Study HIV Health Survey (MOS-HIV) questionnaire, using analysis of variance.
Background: It is currently unclear whether the tendency for viral rebound in patients with viral load < 50 copies/ml differs according to the specific drug regimen being used.
Methods: To follow 2120 patients in EuroSIDA who had attained < 50 copies/ml on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), without previously virologically failing HAART.
Results: The rate of viral rebound (two consecutive values > 400 copies/ml) was 4.
Using data from the UK Register of HIV Sero-converters, we compared the rate of CD4 cell decline in antiretroviral-naive individuals with and without evidence of transmitted drug resistance (TDR). Although there was a suggestion that CD4 cell decline in the first year after seroconversion was faster in those with TDR,there was no evidence of a difference in the rate of decline thereafter. The virological and host determinants of this possible phenomenon are worth further exploration.

Patients' beliefs about the necessity for and concerns about HAART and their adherence to it were assessed using validated questionnaires. There was considerable variation in beliefs and reported adherence.

ACE2 has been implicated in the regulation of heart function and also as a functional receptor for the coronavirus that causes the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). To gain further insights into this enzyme, the first crystal structures of the native and inhibitor-bound forms of the ACE2 extracellular domains were solved to 2.

Ninety-five HIV-1-infected patients were included for which virological and immunological follow-up was available for 75, and baseline drug resistance data available for 51. These were highly drug-experienced patients, having previously received a median of nine antiviral drugs, within all available classes.

The phosphoglucose isomerase from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus, which shows no sequence similarity to any known bacterial or eukaryotic phosphoglucose isomerase, has been cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified and subsequently crystallized by the hanging-drop method of vapour diffusion using 1.6 M sodium citrate as the precipitant at pH 6.

Design, Setting, Participants: A questionnaire developed by the investigators about menstrual function was distributed weekly via e-mail and completed satisfactorily by 116 female freshman at the United States Military Academy (USMA), class of 1995. These data were compared to questionnaires completed by this same cohort at the start and end of the year, as well as to personality questionnaires distributed to some of these cadets as part of a larger study.
A programme bringing together primary care trust non-executives and local counsellors from the same patch changed participants' perceptions of each other. PCT non-executives and counsellors were convinced of the benefits of joint working, but unsure how to go about it. Knowledge of each other's worlds was initially poor.

Design: Bone density was evaluated by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry in 28 postmenarchal females with anorexia nervosa who had never received hormonal therapy. Bone density results were correlated with specific historical and physical factors utilizing descriptive statistics, scatter plots, and the Spearman correlation coefficient.

The literature has demonstrated that both food-related and non food-related obsessions and compulsions are common in patients with eating disorders and that eating disorders are common in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It has become increasingly important, therefore, to evaluate the clinical and etiological relationships between these disorders. The authors present three patients with anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

We present eight cases admitted to a Day Treatment Program (DTP) for Eating Disorders. Additionally, some preliminary comparisons are examined between Orthodox and all other patients, and also between ultra and modern Orthodox patients.

In this report we present four patients who were found to have both an eating disorder and the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Two of the patients presented for evaluation of an eating disorder and also had CFS, while two of the patients presented for evaluation of CFS and also had an eating disorder. In all four patients the eating disorder preceded the CFS.

Over 100 studies have been published in the literature to date on the course and outcome of eating disorders. These have generally shown that approximately 50% of patients do well over time, approximately 30% do reasonably well but continue to have symptoms, and approximately 20% do poorly. In this article, the literature on the course and outcome of eating disorders is reviewed from two perspectives.

Valganciclovir, an oral prodrug of the anti-cytomegalovirus (CMV) agent ganciclovir, was evaluated in a single-arm open-label safety study. AIDS patients (median CD4 lymphocyte count of 140 cells/microL) with treated CMV retinitis (N = 212) received 900-mg once-daily valganciclovir maintenance therapy with courses of 900-mg twice-daily valganciclovir induction therapy as needed to treat progression. After a median treatment duration of 372 days, the adverse event profile was similar to that reported for intravenous (IV) and oral ganciclovir.

In most studies, people who have not responded virologically to a protease inhibitor (PI)-containing regimen have tended to experience poor virologic responses to subsequent regimens. We describe the 2-year viral load, CD4 count, and clinical outcome of a multidrug regimen used in 60 people who had not responded virologically to a PI-containing regimen. At baseline, median CD4 count was 126/mm(3) (nadir 30/mm(3) ) and median viral load was 320,000 copies/mL.
