The present research uncovers the shared genetic underpinnings of fairness norm adaptation capability, its neural correlates, and long-term mental health outcomes. One hundred and eighty-six twins are recruited and played as responders in the Ultimatum Game (UG) while undergoing fMRI scanning in their early adulthood (Study-1) and are measured on depressive symptoms eight years later (Study-2). With computational modeling, the process of norm adaptation is differentiated from that of fairness valuation in UG.

Background: Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are characterized by social cognitive impairments, and recent research has identified alterations of the social brain. However, it is unknown whether familial high risk (FHR) of these disorders is associated with neurobiological alterations already present in childhood.

Objective: Bipolar disorder is characterized by aberrant neurophysiological responses as measured with electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), including the 40-Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR). 40-Hz ASSR deficits are also found in patients with schizophrenia and may represent a transdiagnostic biomarker of neuronal circuit dysfunction. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we summarize and evaluate the evidence for 40-Hz ASSR deficits in patients with bipolar disorder.

Human dexterous motor control improves from childhood to adulthood, but little is known about the changes in cortico-cortical communication that support such ontogenetic refinement of motor skills. To investigate age-related differences in connectivity between cortical regions involved in dexterous control, we analyzed electroencephalographic data from 88 individuals (range 8-30 years) performing a visually guided precision grip task using dynamic causal modelling and parametric empirical Bayes. Our results demonstrate that bidirectional coupling in a canonical 'grasping network' is associated with precision grip performance across age groups.

Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorder thought to result from synaptic dysfunction that affects distributed brain connectivity, rather than any particular brain region. A lesion to the right hemisphere of the brain in humans commonly leads to perceptual neglect of the left side of the sensorium. The clinical observation that lesions to disparate cortical and subcortical areas converge upon similar behavioural symptoms points to neglect as a dysconnection syndrome that may result from the disruption of a distributed network, rather than aberrant computations in any particular brain region. Hypnosis modulates pain perception but the associated brain mechanisms in chronic pain conditions are poorly understood. Brain activity evoked by painful repetitive pin-prick stimulation of the left mental nerve region was investigated with use of fMRI in 19 patients with painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD) during hypnotic hypoalgesia and hyperalgesia and a control condition.
