Effect of Mediterranean Diets on Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Disease in Overweight and Obese Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

We systematically evaluated effects of Mediterranean diets (MED) on cardiovascular (CV) disease and risk factors in overweight or obese adults. Five engines and two registries were searched until October 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating any type of MED compared to other diets or advice in adults. Outcomes of interest were clinical outcomes and CV risk factors (anthropometric, lipids, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, liver function).

Longitudinal Follow-Up of the Psychological Well-Being of Patients with Colorectal Cancer: Final Analysis of PICO-SM.

PICO-SM was a prospective longitudinal study investigating the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with colorectal cancer treated in a large UK tertiary cancer centre. Here, we present the impact of the third wave of the pandemic (December 2021 to February 2022), when the Omicron variant became prevalent in the UK, and the complete longitudinal comparison across the entire duration of this study. Patients were invited to complete a questionnaire, including screening psychometric tools.

Evaluation of the safety and efficacy of peripheral vasopressors to decrease central line placement and associated bloodstream infections.

Background: In 2020, as a result of evidence of demonstrated safety of an initial pilot program, our institution set out to implement a peripheral vasopressor infusion protocol.

Objective: To evaluate the use of peripheral lines for vasopressor administration to reduce placement of unnecessary central lines and central line days.

Objectives: Each year, approximately 5 million dental implants are placed in the United States and one out of three patients is likely to experience peri-implantitis (PI). The objectives were to compare the PI-related education, knowledge, attitudes, and professional behavior of periodontists and oral maxillofacial surgeons (OMS), and to explore relationships between these constructs of interest.

Methods: A total of 389 periodontists and 161 OMS responded to a web-based survey.

Management of severe BK viremia in a patient receiving a kidney transplant from a hepatitis C virus-positive donor: A case report.

Purpose: A case of BK nephropathy in a kidney transplant recipient who received an organ from a hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive donor is reported.

Summary: A 66-year-old male negative for HCV with chronic kidney disease secondary to diabetic glomerulosclerosis received a kidney transplant from an HCV-viremic donor. His initial postoperative course was uncomplicated, and HCV treatment with glecaprevir/pibrentasvir was initiated after discharge.

Oral maxillofacial surgery resident, faculty and practitioner role models and dental students' interest in oral maxillofacial surgery careers: Does gender matter?

Purpose: Residency programs in oral maxillofacial surgery (OMS) have the lowest percentage (2020: 18.4%) of female graduates among all dental specialty programs. When considering this underrepresentation of female OMS residents, prior studies have not examined how OMS role models might shape dental students' interest in OMS careers.

The Mental Health Burden of Patients with Colorectal Cancer Receiving Care during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Results of the PICO-SM Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented changes to the lives of patients with cancer. To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and well-being of patients with colorectal cancer, we conducted a prospective longitudinal questionnaire study at a UK tertiary cancer centre. In total, 216 participants were included: mean age 65 years, 57% ( = 122) male, 92% ( = 198) of white ethnicity.

Evaluation of the safety of a novel peripheral vasopressor pilot program and the impact on central line placement in medical and surgical intensive care units.

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of peripheral vasopressor administration in an attempt to minimize the placement and improve early removal of unnecessary central lines to reduce central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) rates.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients who received vasopressors via peripheral infusion over 3 months, starting at the time of guideline implementation.

Results: We identified 129 vasopressor orders among 79 patients that were administered peripherally.

Evaluation of a multimodal analgesic regimen on outcomes following laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy.

Postoperative pain is a significant source of morbidity in patients undergoing living donor nephrectomy (LDN) and a deterrent for candidates. We implemented a standardized multimodal analgesic regimen, which consists of pharmacist-led pre-procedure pain management education, a combination transversus abdominis plane and rectus sheath block performed by the regional anesthesia team, scheduled acetaminophen and gabapentin, and as-needed opioids. This single-center retrospective study evaluated outcomes between patients undergoing LDN who received a multimodal analgesic regimen and a historical cohort.

Introduction: The use of vaping devices, including e-cigarettes, has been steadily increasing in recent years, especially among younger populations.

Commentary: With many vaping devices on the market and misconceptions about the safety of vaping, there is a substantial amount of information that healthcare professionals need to know. As a response to this growing public health concern, doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) curricula should include opportunities for students to learn more about vaping, vaping devices, associated health outcomes, and role in smoking cessation.

The Impact of Changes in Service Delivery in Patients With Colorectal Cancer During the Initial Phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has imposed significant changes in cancer service delivery resulting in increased anxiety and distress in both patients and clinicians. Dental students' OMFS-related experiences and interest in OMFS careers: An exploration.

Purpose: While the numbers of oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) residents increased over time, women and residents from underrepresented minority backgrounds are still underrepresented. The objectives were to assess dental students' OMFS-related personal and educational experiences and attitudes and explore which factors correlate with their interest in future OMFS careers.

Methods: Data were collected from 493 dental students in 1 dental school and 206 students from 15 other US and Canadian dental schools.

Methods: A total of 138 second-year dental students (traditional group) participated in this study as part of a simulation-based medical emergencies rotation course held during the winter term of 2014 and 2015. Without prior training, students were tested on their ability to locate nine predetermined items on the clinic floor using a self-reported checklist.

Accurate ab Initio Spin Densities.

We present an approach for the calculation of spin density distributions for molecules that require very large active spaces for a qualitatively correct description of their electronic structure. Our approach is based on the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm to calculate the spin density matrix elements as a basic quantity for the spatially resolved spin density distribution. The spin density matrix elements are directly determined from the second-quantized elementary operators optimized by the DMRG algorithm.

Is the toxicity of anti-angiogenic drugs predictive of outcome? A review of hypertension and proteinuria as biomarkers of response to anti-angiogenic therapy.

Introduction: The prototypic anti-angiogenic agents, VEGF inhibitors, are increasingly used in clinical practice to treat a variety of tumours. Although generally well tolerated, their toxicities can be significant or occasionally life threatening. The ability to identify those patients whose disease will respond to VEGF inhibitors would minimise exposure to ineffective drugs for some patients.
