Peroxisomes are essential for intermediary lipid metabolism, but the role of these organelles has been primarily studied in the liver. We recently generated aP2-Pex5 conditional knockout mice that due to the nonselectivity of the aP2 promoter, not only had dysfunctional peroxisomes in the adipose tissue but also in the central and peripheral nervous system, besides some other tissues. Peroxisomes were however intact in the liver, heart, pancreas and muscle.

We report on the control of the faceting of crystal surfaces by means of surface electromigration. When electromigration reinforces the faceting instability, we find perpetual coarsening with a wavelength increasing as t(1/2). For strongly stabilizing electromigration, the surface is stable.

In this paper, we exploit an analogy of the run-and-tumble process for bacterial motility with the Lorentz model of electron conduction in order to obtain analytical results for the intermediate scattering function. This allows to obtain an analytical result for the van Hove function in real space for two-dimensional systems. We furthermore consider the 2D circling motion of bacteria close to solid boundaries with tumbling, and show that the analogy to electron conduction in a magnetic field allows to predict the effective diffusion coefficient of the bacteria.

A number of mouse models for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) have been genetically engineered to recapitulate the severity of human SMA by using a targeted null mutation at the mouse Smn1 locus coupled with the transgenic addition of varying copy numbers of human SMN2 genes. Although this approach has been useful in modeling severe SMA and very mild SMA, a mouse model of the intermediate form of the disease would provide an additional research tool amenable for drug discovery. In addition, many of the previously engineered SMA strains are multi-allelic by design, containing a combination of transgenes and targeted mutations in the homozygous state, making further genetic manipulation difficult.

Relationships between traits of organisms and the structure of their metacommunities have so far mainly been explored with meta-analyses. We compared metacommunities of a wide variety of aquatic organism groups (12 groups, ranging from bacteria to fish) in the same set of 99 ponds to minimise biases inherent to meta-analyses. In the category of passive dispersers, large-bodied groups showed stronger spatial patterning than small-bodied groups suggesting an increasing impact of dispersal limitation with increasing body size.

Glenoid component loosening is a common complication of total shoulder arthroplasty and has been associated with the progression of radiolucent lines at the glenoid bone-cement interface. Generation of heat during the exothermic reaction of cement curing may cause osteonecrosis of bone, potentially leading to the development of radiolucent lines. We study the diffraction of Damon-Eshbach-type spin waves incident on a one-dimensional grating realized by microslits in a thin Permalloy film. By means of time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy, we observe unique diffraction patterns behind the grating which exhibit replications of the spin wave field at the slits. We show that these spin wave images, with details finer than the wavelength of the incident Damon-Eshbach spin wavelength, arise from the strongly anisotropic spin wave dispersion.

We present a search for differences in the oscillations of antineutrinos and neutrinos in the Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, and -III atmospheric neutrino sample. Under a two-flavor disappearance model with separate mixing parameters between neutrinos and antineutrinos, we find no evidence for a difference in oscillation parameters. Although Parkinson's disease (PD) is traditionally considered a motor output disorder, recent evidence suggests that people with PD may have sensory and perceptual impairments that may underlie movement impairments. Yet there has not been any direct testing of perceptual judgments, especially when manipulating the sensory feedback on which these judgments are made. The present study investigated how perception might be influenced by sensory feedback to contribute to height estimations and obstacle stepping in PD relative to healthy age-matched control participants.

In this Letter, we explore the relations between tracer diffusion and flow heterogeneities in amorphous materials. On the basis of scaling arguments and an extensive numerical study of an athermal elastoplastic model, we show that there is a direct link between the self-diffusion coefficient and the size of cooperative regions at low strain rates. Both depend strongly on rate and system size.

The definition of a nonequilibrium temperature through generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations relies on the independence of the fluctuation-dissipation temperature from the observable considered. We argue that this observable independence is deeply related to the uniformity of the phase-space probability distribution on the hypersurfaces of constant energy. This property is shown explicitly on three different stochastic models, where observable dependence of the fluctuation-dissipation temperature arises only when the uniformity of the phase-space distribution is broken.

On general grounds, a nonequilibrium temperature can be consistently defined from generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations only if it is independent of the observable considered. We argue that the dependence on the choice of observable generically occurs when the phase-space probability distribution is nonuniform on constant energy shells. We relate quantitatively this observable dependence to a fundamental characteristics of nonequilibrium systems, namely, the Shannon entropy difference with respect to the equilibrium state with the same energy.

In the present study, we test the relevance of a number of environmental factors on alpha and beta ostracod diversities, at species and family level. Ostracods were sampled from several substrates, including sediment and root systems of various floating aquatic macrophytes, from 48 environments (both lentic and lotic habitats, ranging from the river itself, over connecting channels linking with open lakes, and, finally closed lakes), belonging to four different systems (Paraná, Ivinheima, Baía and Taquaruçu), in the alluvial valley of the Upper Paraná River. The faunistic survey recorded the presence of 54 species of Ostracoda, belonging to the families Cyprididae, Candonidae, Limnocytheridae and Darwinulidae.

The persistence of asexual reproduction in many taxa depends on a balance between the origin of new asexual lineages and the extinction of old ones. This turnover determines the diversity of extant asexual populations and so influences the interaction between sexual and asexual modes of reproduction. The occurrence and abundance of darwinulid ostracods, as well as environmental factors influencing these patterns, were investigated in the alluvial valley of the upper Paraná River. Ostracods were sampled from several substrates, like littoral sediments and pleuston, which included several aquatic macrophytes species, from 31 localities (lentic and lotic) belonging to different riverine systems. We investigate the effects of an electric current on the width of a stationary reaction zone in an irreversible A(-)+B(+)-->C reaction-diffusion process. The ion dynamics of electrolytes A identical with (A(+),A(-)) and B identical with (B(+),B(-)) is described by reaction-diffusion equations obeying local electroneutrality and the stationary state is obtained by employing reservoirs of fixed electrolyte concentrations at the opposite ends of a finite domain. We find that the width of the reaction zone decreases when the current drives the reacting ions toward the reaction zone while it increases in the opposite case.
