Self-regulatory and metacognitive instruction regarding student conceptions can help students become metacognitively (or more specifically, metaconceptually) aware of their conceptions and self-regulate their intuitive conceptions in scientific contexts when they are not appropriate. Two approaches have been found effective in enhancing conceptual knowledge: (a) self-assessing one's conceptions and (b) acquiring conditional metaconceptual knowledge about why and in which contexts specific conceptions are appropriate or not. However, it is unclear how these approaches influence other cognitive and affective variables, such as self-efficacy and cognitive load.

Article Synopsis
  • Pathogenic variants in the SLC34A1 and SLC34A3 genes, responsible for sodium-phosphate transport, lead to rare phosphate wasting conditions, primarily in children, with various clinical presentations and outcomes.
  • A study analyzed data from 113 patients across 90 families, revealing distinct symptoms: SLC34A1 carriers mostly show issues in infancy, while SLC34A3 carriers experience symptoms into childhood and adulthood, including a significantly higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease in adulthood.
  • Biochemical markers were similar for both groups, indicating some common underlying mechanisms, and phosphate treatment yielded partial improvements in certain enzyme levels but raised parathyroid hormone levels, suggesting a complex interaction between treatments and kidney function.

This article presents an algorithmic framework for real-time condition monitoring and state forecasting using multivariate data demonstrated on thermal imagery data of a ship's engine. The proposed method aims to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of condition monitoring and state predictions by identifying the most informative sampling locations of high-dimensional datasets and extracting the underlying dynamics of the system. The method is based on a combination of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), Optimal Sampling Location (OSL), and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), allowing the identification of key features in the system's behavior and predicting future states.

Hepatic lipidosis in dairy cows is the result of a disturbed balance between the uptake of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), their metabolism in the hepatocytes, and the limited efflux of TG as very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). Lipidosis and the associated risk for ketosis represents a consequence of selecting dairy cows primarily for milk production without considering the basic physiological mechanisms of this trait. The overall risk for lipidosis and ketosis possesses a genetic background and the recently released new breeding value of the German Holstein Friesian cows now sets the path for correction of this risk and in that confirms the assumed genetic threat.

Self-assessed will-to-live and self-rated health are associated with long-term survival in community-dwelling older persons but have not been examined in frailer older patients in relation to short-term prognosis. The aim was to explore whether will-to-live and self-rated health are predictive for six-month mortality and can guide ceiling of treatment decisions in hospitalized patients in an acute geriatric ward. We included the Surprise Question as reference, being a well-established clinical tool for short-term prognostication.

Paludiculture, the productive use of wet or rewetted peatlands, offers an option for continued land use by farmers after rewetting formerly drained peatlands, while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from peat soils. Biodiversity conservation may benefit, but research on how biodiversity responds to paludiculture is scarce. We conducted a multi-taxon study investigating vegetation, breeding bird and arthropod diversity at six rewetted fen sites dominated by Carex or Typha species.

The continued increase in milk production during the last century has not been accompanied by an adequate dry matter intake (DMI) by cows, which therefore experience a negative energy balance (NEB). NEB is low and of minor importance at low milk yield (MY), such as for the nutrition of one calf, and under these circumstances is considered "natural". MY and low DMI around parturition are correlated and are the reason for the genetic correlation between increasing MY and increasing NEB up to 2000 MJ or more for 2-3 months postpartum in high-genetic-merit dairy cows.

Modern instruments generate BIG DATA that require information extraction before they can be used. A hybrid modelling framework for that is presented and illustrated. Its purpose is to convert meaningless data to meaningful information and to contribute to a theoretical, practical, and democratic basis for tomorrow's handling of BIG DATA in science and technology.

Lipidosis of the liver of dairy cows is a metabolic disease known since many years and is caused by an uptake of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) into the liver cells, limited metabolism of NEFA (oxidation and production of β-hydroxybutyrate), and resynthesis in relation to a low efflux as triglyceride (TG). The pathogenesis of lipidosis includes a) an augmented release of NEFA by mobilisation of adipose tissue, b) uptake of NEFA into the liver cells, c) metabolism of NEFA and d) re-synthesis of triglyceride and e) an efflux of TG as very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). The steps a-e are postpartum modified by hormones as an increase of growth hormone, a pronounced insulin resistance in combination with a decreased insulin and of IGF-1 concentrations.

The post-synaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) is a crucial scaffolding protein participating in the organization and regulation of synapses. PSD95 interacts with numerous molecules, including neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels. The functional dysregulation of PSD95 as well as its abundance and localization has been implicated with several neurological disorders, making it an attractive target for developing strategies able to monitor PSD95 accurately for diagnostics and therapeutics.

Fungi often adapt to environmental stress by altering their size, shape, or rate of cell division. These morphological changes require reorganization of the cell wall, a structural feature external to the cell membrane composed of highly interconnected polysaccharides and glycoproteins. Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are copper-dependent enzymes that are typically secreted into the extracellular space to catalyze initial oxidative steps in the degradation of complex biopolymers such as chitin and cellulose.

Hydrogeodesy, a relatively new field within the earth sciences, is the analysis of the distribution and movement of terrestrial water at Earth's surface using measurements of Earth's shape, orientation, and gravitational field. In this paper, we review the current state of hydrogeodesy with a specific focus on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/Global Positioning System measurements of hydrologic loading. As water cycles through the hydrosphere, GNSS stations anchored to Earth's crust measure the associated movement of the land surface under the weight of changing hydrologic loads.

Most patients with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) remain genetically unexplained. In search of novel genes associated with CAKUT in humans, we applied whole-exome sequencing in a patient with kidney, anorectal, spinal, and brain anomalies, and identified a rare heterozygous missense variant in the DACT1 (dishevelled binding antagonist of beta catenin 1) gene encoding a cytoplasmic WNT signaling mediator. Our patient's features overlapped Townes-Brocks syndrome 2 (TBS2) previously described in a family carrying a DACT1 nonsense variant as well as those of Dact1-deficient mice.

Hyperspectral imaging has recently gained increasing attention from academic and industrial world due to its capability of providing both spatial and physico-chemical information about the investigated objects. While this analytical approach is experiencing a substantial success and diffusion in very disparate scenarios, far less exploited is the possibility of collecting sequences of hyperspectral images over time for monitoring dynamic scenes. This trend is mainly justified by the fact that these so-called hyperspectral usually result in BIG DATA sets, requiring TBs of computer memory to be both stored and processed.

Palm kernel cake (PKC) is an abundant side stream that can only be added to non-ruminant feed in small concentrations due to its content of antinutritional factors, mainly galactomannan, which cannot be digested by non-ruminants. β-mannanases can be added to partially hydrolyze galactomannan to form mannose oligosaccharides, which are known to be prebiotic. We here investigate the action of a β-mannanase from on PKC by colorimetry, NMR and fluorescence microscopy.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive upper and lower motor neuron (LMN) loss. As ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases share genetic risk factors, we performed whole-exome sequencing in ALS patients focusing our analysis on genes implicated in neurodegeneration. Thus, variants in the gene encoding dehydrogenase E1 and transketolase domain containing 1 previously linked to 2-aminoadipic and 2-oxoadipic aciduria, Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease type 2, and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) were identified.

The combined actions of climatic variations and landscape barriers shape the history of natural populations. When organisms follow their shifting niches, obstacles in the landscape can lead to the splitting of populations, on which evolution will then act independently. When two such populations are reunited, secondary contact occurs in a broad range of admixture patterns, from narrow hybrid zones to the complete dissolution of lineages.
