Glucose addition and subsequent run-out experiments were compared to simulations with a detailed glycolytic model of Lactococcus lactis. The model was constructed largely on bases of enzyme kinetic data taken from literature and not adjusted for the specific simulations shown here. Upon glucose depletion a rapid increase in PEP, inorganic phosphate and a gradual decrease in fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (FBP) were measured and predicted by simulation.

Analytical solutions were compared to numerical ones, and both were able to predict the onset of interaction well. The derived analytical solution modeled the lactic acid concentration profile as a function of the diffusion coefficient, colony radius, and volumetric production rate.

Sequences containing the non-homologous region origin of DNA replication (non-hr ori) became hypermolar in intracellular viral DNA within 10 passages in Se301 insect cells, concurrent with a dramatic drop in budded virus and polyhedron production. These predominant non-hr ori-containing sequences accumulated in larger concatenated forms and were generated de novo as demonstrated by their appearance and accumulation upon infection with a genetically homogeneous bacterial clone of SeMNPV (bacmid).

The results of the two laboratories were in good agreement. The extraction yields from the batch extraction methods were lower than those from the dynamic techniques.

In the more traditional genetic engineering approaches 'bottle-necks' are pinpointed using qualitative, intuitive approaches, but the alleviation of suspected 'rate-limiting' steps has not often been successful. Here the authors demonstrate that a model of pyruvate distribution in Lactococcus lactis based on enzyme kinetics in combination with metabolic control analysis clearly indicates the key control points in the flux to acetoin and diacetyl, important flavour compounds.

Direct photolysis half-lives for some other PAHs without reported values were predicted. It was concluded from the model that the main factors affecting photolysis half-lives of PAHs under irradiation of sunlight are PAH absolute hardness and electronegativity, which are related to the energy difference between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and the highest occupied molecular orbital, (Elumo - Ehomo) and (Elumo + Ehomo), respectively.

We investigated their origin by (nested) PCR and demonstrated that DIs lacking approximately 43% (d43) of their DNA are present in low-passage Autographa californica multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV)-E2 virus stocks and in polyhedra, but not in the authentic AcMNPV isolate obtained prior to passage in cell culture. To investigate whether DIs are rapidly generated de novo in Sf21 insect cells, a genetically homogeneous AcMNPV bacmid was serially passaged, resulting in the generation of d43 DIs within two passages.

The presence of organic micro-pollutants in this new type of reference materials has already been studied for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, triazines, phenylureas and other pesticides. The already large amount of data concerning the level of different contaminants, the elemental composition and matrix properties is completed by a survey by means of GC/MS on the polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and other chlorinated hydrocarbons.

The raw material was sampled during a cruise on Yangtse River and transported afterwards to the JRC Ispra for further processing. The material was treated according to the general principles applicable for candidate reference material production.

1. The differential responsiveness of various sections and regions in the vascular system to the vasodilator activity of organic nitrates is important for the beneficial antiischaemic effects of these drugs. In this study we examined the vasodilator activity of organic nitrates in cerebral arteries, where vasodilation causes substantial nitrate induced headache.

The results show that the concentrations of PCOCs in Yangtse River sediments followed the order of DDTs > HCB > HCHs > PCBs. High PCOCs concentrations were detected in sediments from station Y02a and Y02b, which are located in the main input of the Yangtse River (Nanjing section).

The effect of applying a low inoculation on the specific growth rate and on the duration of the lag phase was tested. Their concentrations determined by GC/MS were very low in comparison with those in European River. The average concentration of total HCH (alpha-HCH, beta-HCH, gamma-HCH) was much higher than that of other PCOCs in all waters, which made up 65% of total amount of PCOCs.

Although cumulative S phase labeling studies have investigated the proliferation kinetics of the overall population of precursor cells within the forebrain germinal zone through brain development, little is known about when and how (symmetrically or asymmetrically) the small subpopulations of stem cells are proliferating in vivo. This has been determined by injecting timed-pregnant mice with high doses of tritiated thymidine ((3)H-thy) to kill any stem cells proliferating within the striatal germinal zone in vivo and then by assaying for neurosphere formation in vitro.

Objective: A new 3D ultrasound system using a position sensor based on magnetic scanhead tracking and new software utilising automatic contour tracing between manually traced contours was tested for volume estimation of kidneys in vitro.
Methods: Kidneys from piglets and pigs were fixed in formaldehyde. A reservoir with 0.
In this paper, we present a new method for simple acquisition of dynamic three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound data. We used a magnetic position sensor device attached to the ultrasound probe for spatial location of the probe, which was slowly tilted in the transthoracic scanning position. The 3-D data were recorded in 10-20 s, and the analysis was performed on an external PC within 2 min after transferring the raw digital ultrasound data directly from the scanner.

A twofold increase of OCDD and HpCDD was found after a digestion period of 192 days even if concentrations were corrected by corresponding accumulation factors caused by the degradation of biomass. Other polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) were not increased.
