Analysis of adverse events in general surgery. Multicenter study.

Introduction: Knowledge of adverse events (AE) in acute care hospitals is a particularly relevant aspect of patient safety. Its incidence ranges from 3% to 17%, and surgery is related to the occurrence of 46%-65% of all AE.

Material And Methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective, multicenter study was conducted with the participation of 31 Spanish acute-care hospitals to determine and analyze AE in general surgery services.

Colocolic intussusception by lipoma in transverse colon. A cause of intestinal obstruction.

Lipomas in the colon usually present as sessile polypoid masses, rarely pedunculated, with variable dimensions. They are generally asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally although occasionally they may debut with symptoms. We present the case of a 48-year-old male with intestinal obstruction secondary to colonic lipoma causing invagination at the level of the transverse colon.

Intestinal obstruction due to bariolith impaction.

"Bariolith" is defined as the concretion of barium sulfate in the intestine after performing a radiological study with said contrast. Complications derived from the use of barium are exceptional, but appendicitis, intussusception, volvulus, ulceration, ischemia and perforation have been described. We present the case of a 62 years old woman, who underwent a EGD exploration on the 15th of January 2021 as a part of her study for suspected GERD.

Predictive Power of the "Trigger Tool" for the detection of adverse events in general surgery: a multicenter observational validation study.

Background: In spite of the global implementation of standardized surgical safety checklists and evidence-based practices, general surgery remains associated with a high residual risk of preventable perioperative complications and adverse events. This study was designed to validate the hypothesis that a new "Trigger Tool" represents a sensitive predictor of adverse events in general surgery.

Methods: An observational multicenter validation study was performed among 31 hospitals in Spain.

Multicentre cohort study of acute cholecystitis management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose: To analyse acute cholecystitis (AC) management during the first pandemic outbreak after the recommendations given by the surgical societies estimating: morbidity, length of hospital stay, mortality and hospital-acquired SARS-CoV-2 infection rate.

Methods: Multicentre-combined (retrospective-prospective) cohort study with AC patients in the Community of Madrid between 1st March and 30th May 2020. 257 AC patients were involved in 16 public hospital.

[Intrathyroidal location of parathyroid glands. Atypical presentation of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome].

Background: The most common manifestation of MEN 1 syndrome is primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) with parathyroid multiglandular affectation. The intrathyroidal situation represents 3-4% of all glands, and it is the second most frequent location in the cervical ectopias.

Clinical Case: 11 year old patient, with a family history of MEN1 syndrome and carrier of this same mutation.

First case reported of Bouveret´s syndrome associated to duodenal and biliary perforation to retroperitoneum.

We present the case of a 69 year old woman with a history of cholecystitis, who consulted for severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Abdominal CT showed duodenal obstruction caused by a gallstone, cholecystoduodenal fistula and pneumobilia, what is known as Bouveret's syndrome, a rare form of gallstone ileus. Additionally, she presented free duodenal and vesicular perforation to retroperitoneum at the same level of the cholecystoduodenal transit point.
