The HLA profile is essential in cell and tissue transplantation, particularly in patients with autoimmune conditions and infections. Due to the extreme polymorphism in certain HLA loci, it also serves as a key tool for population genetic analysis. This study aimed to identify the allele and haplotype distributions of HLA class I (A, B, and C) and class II (DRB1) genotypes in unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donors.

Recent studies demonstrate the efficacy of B cell-targeting therapies in managing multiple sclerosis (MS) activity, emphasizing the critical role of B cells in MS pathogenesis. CladB study aimed to quantify the temporal changes in peripheral immune cells and their activity over 96 weeks of Cladribine tablets (CladT) treatment in relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Ten participants (3 males, 7 females) had blood samples collected at multiple intervals (Day 0, 1, 5, then weekly for 8 weeks, biweekly for up to 24 weeks, and monthly for up to 96 weeks) for immune cell analysis, compared to a historical alemtuzumab-treated cohort.

Background And Objective: Extracellular vesicles (EV) reflect the pathophysiological state of their cells of origin and are a reservoir of renal information accessible in urine. When biopsy is not an option, EV present themselves as sentinels of function and damage, providing a non-invasive approach. However, the analysis of EV in urine requires prior isolation, which slows down and hinders transition into clinical practice.

We report the charge-changing cross sections (σ) of 24 p-shell nuclides on both hydrogen and carbon at about 900A MeV, of which Li, Be, B, N and O on hydrogen and Li on carbon are for the first time. Benefiting from the data set, we found a new and robust relationship between the scaling factor of the Glauber model calculations and the separation energies of the nuclei of interest on both targets. This allows us to deduce proton radii (R) for the first time from the cross sections on hydrogen.

Right ventricular failure (RVF) after cardiac surgery is associated with an in-hospital mortality rate of up to 75%. Microaxial flow pumps are one of the mechanical circulatory supports (MCS) options available for the treatment of RVF, however the specifics of timing and indication for MCS, as well as predictors for survival, remain unclear due to a dearth of published data. We evaluated the clinical outcome of patients treated with Impella-RP for predictors of mortality and the hemodynamic effects of the pump.

Background And Aims: Walled-off necrosis (WON) is a serious complication of severe pancreatitis, patients with necrotizing pancreatitis having an increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of new-onset diabetes (NOD) in patients with symptomatic WON after endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage with lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a prospectively collected database of patients with symptomatic WON treated by EUS-guided drainage with LAMS in a tertiary referral center.

The presence of central nervous system lesions fulfilling the criteria of dissemination in space and time on MRI leads to the diagnosis of a radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS), which may be an early sign of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, some patients who do not fulfill the necessary criteria for RIS still evolve to MS, and some T2 hyperintensities that resemble demyelinating lesions may originate from mimics. In light of the recent recognition of the efficacy of disease-modifying therapy (DMT) in RIS, it is relevant to consider additional imaging features that are more specific of MS.

Background: Cladribine is an effective immunotherapy for people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Whilst most pwMS do not require re-treatment following standard dosing (two treatment courses), disease activity re-emerges in others. The characteristics of pwMS developing re-emerging disease activity remain incompletely understood.

There is a lack of published guidelines on the management of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) undergoing procedures that require anaesthesia and respective advice is largely based on retrospective studies or case reports. The aim of this paper is to provide recommendations for anaesthetists and neurologists for the management of patients with MS requiring anaesthesia. This review covers issues related to the anaesthetic management of patients with MS, with a focus on preoperative assessment, choice of anaesthetic techniques and agents, side-effects of drugs used during anaesthesia and their potential impact on the disease evolution, drug interactions that may occur, and the need to use monitoring devices.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the link between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in 2392 patients awaiting kidney transplants, highlighting genetic and environmental influences.
  • Results showed that certain HLA alleles, such as HLA-A*11 and HLA-B*41, were positively associated with an increased risk of ESRD, while others like HLA-DRB1*07 provided a protective effect.
  • The findings suggest that understanding HLA polymorphisms could help identify patients at higher risk for ESRD and improve outcomes post-transplant by enhancing graft survival.

Objectives: Our objectives were to investigate the characteristics of people living with HIV who presented with new or recurrent symptoms in the context of re-emergence of cerebrospinal fluid HIV RNA escape after antiretroviral therapy (ART) modification (termed relapse of CSF HIV RNA escape).

Methods: People living with HIV-1 with known CSF HIV RNA escape were identified, with clinical and laboratory data obtained from records in a tertiary centre. CSF HIV RNA escape was defined as quantifiable CSF HIV RNA in the presence of unquantifiable plasma HIV-RNA or CSF HIV RNA greater than plasma HIV RNA in cases where plasma HIV-RNA was quantifiable.

Studies indicating the influence of masticatory dysfunction, due to a soft diet or lack of molars, on impairing spatial memory and learning have led to research about neuronal connections between areas and cell populations possibly affected. In this sense, with scarce detailed data on the subfields of hippocampus in dementia neurodegeneration, there is no information about astrocytic responses in its different layers. Thus, considering this context, the present study evaluated the effects of deprivation and rehabilitation of masticatory activity, aging, and environmental enrichment on the stereological quantification of hippocampal astrocytes from layers CA1, CA3, and DG.

There is currently a growing anti-gluten trend which, except for individuals with coeliac disease and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) for whom its intake is contraindicated, results in gluten (the main protein in wheat and other cereals) being considered harmful to health and excluded from diets, largely due to information distributed through social networks. However, in many cases the recommendation to exclude gluten from the diet goes beyond personal choice and is promoted by health professionals. This choice and/or recommendation is especially important to individuals with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), for which this exclusion is justified to reduce the symptoms of the disease.

The root mean square radii of the proton density distribution in ^{16-24}O derived from measurements of charge changing cross sections with a carbon target at ∼900A  MeV together with the matter radii portray thick neutron skin for ^{22-24}O despite ^{22,24}O being doubly magic. Imprints of the shell closures at N=14 and 16 are reflected in local minima of their proton radii that provide evidence for the tensor interaction causing them. The radii agree with ab initio calculations employing the chiral NNLO_{sat} interaction, though skin thickness predictions are challenged.
