Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how chronic exposure to food-grade titanium dioxide (fg-TiO), a common food additive, affects the development of food allergies (FA) in young males through impacts on intestinal health and immune response.
  • Researchers assessed the health and immune system of offspring whose mothers were fed diets either enriched with fg-TiO or control food from preconception to weaning, finding altered gut barrier and microbiota compositions.
  • Findings indicate that perinatal exposure to fg-TiO may decrease the ability to develop oral tolerance to cow's milk proteins, showing a significant predisposition to food allergies, particularly in male subjects.

Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding protein found at relatively high concentrations in human milk. LF, which is little degraded in the infant intestinal lumen, is known to stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of the small intestine epithelial cells. The present study was designed to evaluate in the rat model the effects of bovine LF (bLF) given to the mothers during gestation and lactation on the growth of the offspring.

Article Synopsis
  • Sphingolipids have potential to help prevent metabolic syndrome (MetS), based on research using mouse models with different diets.
  • Mice fed diets enriched with certain types of sphingolipids showed improvements in body fat, insulin resistance, inflammation, and colon health after 5 weeks.
  • The C16-NHGIPC-enriched diet was especially effective for colon barrier function, indicating that the structure of sphingolipids might play a role in their health benefits.
