Importance: Reducing the burden of stroke is a public health priority. While higher stroke incidence among ethnic minority populations (defined in the context of this study as individuals who are not White) is well established, reports on ethnic inequalities in care or outcomes are conflicting and often limited to hospital-admitted patients and short-term outcomes.
Objective: To investigate ethnic differences in stroke care and outcomes up to 5 years after stroke and describe temporal trends and contributory factors.
Unlabelled: Cable bacteria, filamentous sulfide oxidizers that live in sulfidic sediments, are at times associated with large flocks of swimming bacteria. It has been proposed that these flocks of bacteria transport electrons extracellularly to cable bacteria via an electron shuttle intermediate, but the identity and activity of these bacteria in freshwater sediment remain mostly uninvestigated. Here, we elucidate the electron exchange capabilities of the bacterial community by coupling metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to 16S rRNA amplicon-based correlations with cable bacteria over 155 days.

Despite growing evidence on the impact of SES on stroke, gaps remain in understanding the underlying mechanisms and the influence of SES in different contexts, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This narrative review builds upon our previous reviews from 2006 to 2015, focusing on studies published since 2015 to update on the influence of SES on stroke.

However, identifying relevant research is not a straightforward task since public health interventions are often complex, can have positive and negative impacts on health inequalities and are applied in diverse and rapidly evolving settings. We developed a "living" database of public health research literature to facilitate access to this information using Natural Language Processing tools.

We investigated associations between cerebrovascular reactivity and 1-year progression of SVD features and clinical outcomes.
Methods: Between 2018 and 2021, we recruited patients from the Edinburgh/Lothian stroke services presenting with minor ischemic stroke and SVD features as part of the Mild Stroke Study 3, a prospective observational cohort study (ISRCTN 12113543).
Thermodynamics has predicted many different kinds of microbial metabolism by determining which pairs of electron acceptors and donors will react to produce an exergonic reaction (a negative net change in Gibbs free energy). In energy-limited environments, such as the deep subsurface, such an approach can reveal the potential for unexpected or counter-intuitive energy sources for microbial metabolism. Up until recently, these thermodynamic calculations have been carried out with the assumption that chemical species appearing on the reactant and product side of a reaction formula have a constant concentration, and thus do not count towards net concentration changes and the overall direction of the reaction.

Unlabelled: Cable bacteria are filamentous bacteria that couple the oxidation of sulfide in sediments to the reduction of oxygen via long-distance electron transport over centimeter distances through periplasmic wires. However, the capability of cable bacteria to perform extracellular electron transfer to acceptors, such as electrodes, has remained elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that living cable bacteria actively move toward electrodes in different bioelectrochemical systems.

Here, we examined 30 bacterial metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from cold seeps in the South China Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Scotian Basin, and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as from deep-sea hydrothermal sediments in the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. Phylogenetic analyses of these MAGs indicate that they form a distinct phylum-level bacterial lineage, which we propose as a new phylum, Effluviviacota, in reference to its preferential occurrence at diverse seep areas.

Aims: This scoping review aims to map where stroke registers have been implemented in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The article then compares and critiques the methods and definitions used and summarizes key results from the registers.

Background: The World Health Organisation has expanded the definition of stroke to include people with symptoms less than 24 h if they have evidence of stroke on neuroimaging. The impact is that people previously diagnosed as having a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) would now be considered to have had a stroke. This change will impact incidence and outcomes of stroke and increase eligibility for secondary prevention.

HRQoL after stroke is understudied in Africa and there are no reports of quality-adjusted life years after stroke (QALYs) in African countries. We determined the impact of stroke on HRQoL after stroke in Sierra Leone.

Methods: A prospective stroke register at two tertiary government hospitals recruited all patients with the WHO definition of stroke and followed patients up at seven days, 90 days and one year post stroke. The newly translated EQ-5D-3L, Barthel Index (BI), modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), a measure of stroke severity, were collected by trained researchers, face to face during admission and via phone at follow up.
Objectives: Question answering (QA) systems have the potential to improve the quality of clinical care by providing health professionals with the latest and most relevant evidence. However, QA systems have not been widely adopted. This systematic review aims to characterize current medical QA systems, assess their suitability for healthcare, and identify areas of improvement.

Prior forecasts are based on population demography and to a lesser extent epidemiological trends. This study aims to utilise selected modifiable risk factors and socio-demographic indicators to forecast the incidence and mortality of intracerebral haemorrhage in Europe between 2019 and 2050.

Cable bacteria have not been obtained in pure culture and were therefore previously described as candidate genera, Candidatus Electrothrix and Ca. Electronema; a representative of the latter is available as single-strain sediment enrichment.

Approach: An original U-Net model trained on 130 manually labeled post-Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (EK) images was applied to 841 post-Descemet membrane EK images generating "uncorrected" cell border segmentations. Segmentations were then manually edited using the Guided Correction Software to create corrected labels.
Cable bacteria are multicellular, filamentous bacteria that use internal conductive fibers to transfer electrons over centimeter distances from donors within anoxic sediment layers to oxygen at the surface. We extracted the fibers and used them as free-standing bio-based electrodes to investigate their electrocatalytic behavior. The fibers catalyzed the reversible interconversion of oxygen and water, and an electric current was running through the fibers even when the potential difference was generated solely by a gradient of oxygen concentration.

Less is known about the relationship between CVR and other SVD imaging features or cognition. We aimed to investigate these cross-sectional relationships.

Neurometabolites may be associated with clinical disability with evidence that baseline neuroaxonal integrity is associated with upper limb function and processing speed in secondary progressive MS (SPMS).
Purpose: To assess the effect on neurometabolites from three candidate drugs after 96-weeks as seen by H-MRS and their association with clinical disability in SPMS.
