Introduction: Electrical stimulation offers a drug-free alternative for the treatment of many neurological conditions, such as chronic pain. However, it is not easy to selectively activate afferent or efferent fibers of mixed nerves, nor their functional subtypes. Optogenetics overcomes these issues by controlling activity selectively in genetically modified fibers, however the reliability of responses to light are poor compared to electrical stimulation and the high intensities of light required present considerable translational challenges.

Herein, we demonstrate a single-step synthesis of simple copper-doped borophosphate glasses and their unusual use for catalytic reduction of nitro groups from the aromatic nitro compounds. The copper-doped glasses were evaluated as an affordable heterogeneous catalytic glass-based material for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride. The glass matrix acts as a host and support material for in situ self-growth of zero-valent copper (Cu) nanoparticles (NPs) on the glass surface.

We examine the challenges formerly homeless young adults (FHYAs) face after they transition out of homelessness. Considering the adversities FHYAs face, it is unclear how transitioning to stable housing may affect their mental well-being or what types of stressors they may experience once housed. This study investigates the social environment young adults encounter in their transition to stable housing and examines trauma and social coping predictors of mental health symptoms in a sample of FHYAs to generate new knowledge for better intervening to meet their needs.

We aimed to determine whether intraoperative ultrasound is a feasible tool for visualization of the pouch of Douglas (POD) to facilitate a safe vaginal entry for direct robotic vaginal trocar insertion for pelvic floor surgery. Endovaginal ultrasound-guided needle insertion of a trocar into the POD was performed in six fresh frozen female cadavers and a live sheep animal model. Using an endovaginal probe the POD was identified as a fluid-filled space clear of bowel or adhesions, then a Veress needle was also used to confirm POD localization.

Flavor is a key attribute defining melon fruit quality and driving consumer preferences. We characterized and compared fruit ripening patterns (ethylene, respiration), physicochemical properties (rind/flesh color, firmness, soluble solids, acidity), aroma volatiles, and flavor-related sensory attributes in seven melon genotypes differing in shelf life capacity. Fruits were evaluated at optimal maturity and after storage for six days at 5 °C plus one day at room temperature.

Reduced exertion high intensity interval training (REHIT) is an extremely low-volume approach of sprint interval exercise (SIE) that increases maximal oxygen uptake (VOmax) and reduces body fat. However, there are concerns regarding implementation of SIE including REHIT in untrained populations due to generation of supramaximal power outputs and potential feelings of displeasure. This study examined perceptual responses to a single REHIT session in adults with above (n = 43, VOmax = 41 ± 6 mL/kg/min) and below average VOmax (n = 42, VOmax = 33 ± 5 mL/kg/min).

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is widely used to infer microstructural characteristics of tissue, particularly in cerebral white matter. Histological validation of the metrics derived from dMRI methods are needed to fully characterize their ability to capture biologically-relevant histological features non-invasively. The data described here were used to correlate metrics derived from dMRI and quantitative histology in an animal model of axonal degeneration ("Histological validation of per-bundle water diffusion metrics within a region of fiber crossing following axonal degeneration" [1]).

Micro-architectural characteristics of white matter can be inferred through analysis of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). The diffusion-dependent signal can be analyzed through several methods, with the tensor model being the most frequently used due to its straightforward interpretation and low requirements for acquisition parameters. While valuable information can be gained from the tensor-derived metrics in regions of homogeneous tissue organization, this model does not provide reliable microstructural information at crossing fiber regions, which are pervasive throughout human white matter.

Over the last 70 yr, more than 12,000 maize accessions have been screened for their level of resistance to western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (LeConte; Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), larval feeding. Less than 1% of this germplasm was selected for initiating recurrent selection or other breeding programs. Selected genotypes were mostly characterized by large root systems and superior root regrowth after root damage caused by western corn rootworm larvae.

In optics, when interferograms or digital holograms are recorded and their phase is recovered, it is common to obtain a wrapped phase with some errors, noise and artifacts such as singularities due to the non linearities of the demodulation process. This paper shows how to reconstruct the frequency field of the wrapped phase by using adaptive Gabor filters. Gabor filters are Gaussian quadrature filters tuned in at a certain frequency.

The sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) is an electroencephalographic rhythm associated with motor and cognitive development observed in the central brain regions during wakefulness in the absence of movement, and it reacts contralaterally to generalized and hemibody movements. The purpose of this work was to characterize the SMR of 4-month-old infants, born either healthy at term or prematurely with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL).
