Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate, by comparing clinical and histological outcomes, whether laparoscopic (hybrid) wedge resection (LWR) could be a less invasive and safe alternative to laparoscopic oncological colon resection (OCR) for patients with an endoscopically unresectable, suspected benign, colon polyp.

Method: All patients with an endoscopically unresectable colon polyp who were referred for surgery between 2009 and 2018 and without biopsy-proven colon cancer were identified from a prospectively maintained database. Patients with macroscopic features of malignancy during endoscopy were excluded.

In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), the search for better prognostic factors beyond TNM-stage is ongoing. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether implementation of a comprehensive quality improvement program was associated with improved outcomes in patients undergoing oncological colorectal surgery in a non-academic, non-referral community hospital.

Methods: The quality improvement program (QIP) was introduced in January 2011 and consisted of the following interventions: (1) avoidance of postoperative nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs; (2) normovolemia was pursued pre- and postoperatively; (3) non-resectional surgery if possible, in patients over 80 with ASA 3 or 4 classification; and (4) a standardized, postoperative surveillance protocol was introduced, with CRP determination day 2 and 4, and if necessary subsequent abdominal CT with rectal contrast to reduce delay in diagnosis of complications. From a prospectively maintained database of 488 patients undergoing colorectal surgery between 2009 and 2014, postoperative outcomes of patients operated before and after implementation of the program were compared.

In this article we describe three patients aged 53, 39 and 70 with a therapy-resistant anal fissure. Each patient was inspected under anaesthesia. In all three cases a suspicious lesion or swelling was observed and all biopsies taken showed anal malignancies.

We have previously reported the isolation of the gene coding for a 25-kDa polypeptide present in a purified yeast QH2:cytochrome c oxidoreductase preparation, which was thus identified as the gene for the Rieske iron-sulphur protein [Van Loon et al. (1983) Gene 26, 261-272]. Subsequent DNA sequence analysis reported here reveals, however, that the encoded protein is in fact manganese superoxide dismutase, a mitochondrial matrix protein.

(1) The kinetics of the reduction by duroquinol of the prosthetic groups of QH2:cytochrome c oxidoreductase and of the formation of ubisemiquinone have been studied using a combination of the freeze-quench technique, low-temperature diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, EPR and stopped flow. (2) The formation of the antimycin-sensitive ubisemiquinone anion parallels the reduction of both high-potential and low-potential cytochrome b-562. (3) The rates of reduction of both the [2Fe-2S] clusters and cytochromes (c + c1) are pH dependent.

In 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoate) (DTNB)-treated succinate: cytochrome c reductase, the electron transfer from duroquinol to cytochrome c is inhibited due to the fact that the Rieske Fe-S cluster and, consequently, cytochrome, c, are no longer reducible by substrate. The finding that, after this treatment, cytochrome b is still reducible by substrate in the absence of antimycin, but not in its presence, is consistent with a Q-cycle mechanism for the electron transfer through QH2:cytochrome c oxidoreductase. The inhibitory effect of DTNB and its effect on the EPR spectrum of the [2Fe-2S] cluster suggest that it prevents either the binding of ubiquinone in the vicinity of this cluster or the interaction between the Fe-S protein and a ubiquinone-binding protein.

1. The polypeptide composition of purified QH2: cytochrome c oxidoreductase prepared by three different methods from beef-heart mitochondria has been determined. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of dodecyl sulphate resolves eight intrinsic polypeptide bands; when, in addition, 8 M urea is present and a more highly cross-linked gel is used, the smallest polypeptide band is resolved into three different bands.
