Purpose: It is unclear whether computed tomography (CT) scans alter the surgical plan when ordered before surgery for fixation of intra-articular distal radius fractures (DRFs). The purpose of this study was to determine whether a preoperative CT scan alters the planned approach (PA) or planned fixation strategy (PFS) for open reduction internal fixation of intra-articular DRFs.
Methods: Radiology records were retrospectively reviewed by one trauma surgeon and two hand surgeons for 33 intra-articular DRFs that met the inclusion criteria and previously underwent open reduction internal fixation.

Introduction: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has the highest annual incidence among all joint replacement surgeries. Below-knee amputation (BKA) is another common procedure to treat lower-limb-threatening pathologies. These two procedures are commonly performed individually, but an ipsilateral TKA performed on a BKA patient is rare.

We organized a three-day Datathon event to improve the openness of local biodiversity data and facilitate data reuse by local researchers. The first Datathon, organized among microbial ecologists in Uruguay and Argentina assembled the largest microbiome dataset in the region to date and formed collaborative consortia for microbiome data synthesis.

We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of the 2021 volcanic eruption on air quality (SO, PM and PM concentrations) utilising a multidisciplinary approach, combining ground and satellite-based measurements with height-resolved aerosol and meteorological information.

Our objective in this study was to determine the weights for each dimension of the GAH scale and the cut-off point to reliably predict treatment tolerability in this population, estimated by a weighted receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and quantified by the area under the curve (AUC).
Material And Methods: The RETROGAH was a retrospective cohort study including 126 patients who had previously participated in the GAH study.
Introduction: The objective of this study was to examine the payer mix and the economic impact of acute firearm injuries at a Level I Trauma Center in New Orleans.
Methods: Acute firearm injury economic data were obtained from the trauma registry database of the University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana for 2016 through 2019. Patients were identified by the ICD-10-CM external causes of morbidity codes found in their electronic medical records.
The prognosis for patients with metastatic melanoma (MM) involving distant organs is grim, and treatment resistance is potentiated by tumor-initiating cells (TICs) that thrive under hypoxia. MM cells, including TICs, express a unique glycome featuring i-linear poly-N-acetyllactosamines through the loss of I-branching enzyme, β1,6 N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 2. Whether hypoxia instructs MM TIC development by modulating the glycome signature remains unknown.

A modified two-stage strategy is used in patients with a great saphenous vein (GSV) diameter ≥9 mm with the goal to decrease the risk of symptomatic superficial vein thrombosis (SVT), as the risk of complications is higher when first and second stage is performed simultaneously.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 111 patients with CVD and a GVS diameter ≥9 mm treated with two possible stages of the CHIVA strategy, between January 2010 and December 2019.
Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) disease in COVID-19 patients is a remarkable issue, especially its relationship with bleeding events and mortality. The objective of this study was to describe the outcomes of critically ill patients with COVID-19, hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in relationship with VTE during their stay.
Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of critically ill COVID-19 patients in two hospitals that underwent a venous ultrasound at the beginning of follow-up of both lower limbs in April 2020.
Objective: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in Northern Barcelona at 65 years of age.
Methods: A single-center, cross-sectional study, including males and females 65 years of age, health care cardholders of Barcelona Nord. PAD was defined as an ankle-brachial index (ABI) < 0.
Objective: The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) due to SARS-CoV-2 infection has been found to cause an increased risk of venous thrombo-embolism (VTE). The aims of the study were to determine the frequency of VTE in critically ill patients with COVID-19 and its correlation with D dimer levels and pharmacological prophylaxis.
Methods: This was a cohort study of critically ill patients due to COVID-19.
We apply recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to predict the time evolution of the concentration profile of multiple species resulting from a set of interconnected chemical reactions. As a proof of concept of our approach, RNNs were trained on a synthetic dataset generated by solving the kinetic equations of a system of aqueous inorganic iodine reactions that can follow after nuclear reactor accidents. We examine the minimum dataset necessary to obtain accurate predictions and explore the ability of RNNs to interpolate and extrapolate when exposed to previously unseen data.

The uninsured rate in the United States has decreased, but does the increased coverage translate to increased access to outpatient orthopedic care? Through a simulated patient telephone survey, this study aims to evaluate access to orthopedic surgeons for Medicaid patients in Louisiana.
Methods: A comprehensive list of potentially eligible orthopedic surgeons in the state of Louisiana was obtained from an online public database managed by the Louisiana Medicaid website (lamedicaid.
Heart failure is the leading cause of death in the Western world, and new and innovative treatments are needed. The GPCR (G protein-coupled receptor) adapter proteins βarr (β-arrestin)-1 and βarr-2 are functionally distinct in the heart. βarr1 is cardiotoxic, decreasing contractility by opposing βAR (adrenergic receptor) signaling and promoting apoptosis/inflammation post-myocardial infarction (MI).

Introduction: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by searing pain, hyperalgesia, edema, allodynia, and skin changes. CRPS may be difficult to diagnose and to treat given poorly understood mechanisms as well as its presentation of symptoms that may mimic common conditions such as joint stiffness in this condition as well as rheumatoid arthritis.

High-dose chemotherapy supported by autologous stem cell transplantation (HDT/ASCT) has contributed to modify the natural history of follicular lymphoma (FL); however, an overall survival (OS) benefit has been demonstrated at relapse only after a rituximab-free chemotherapy regimen. A total of 655 patients with FL were reported to the Spanish GELTAMO (Grupo Español de Linfomas y Trasplantes de Médula Ósea) registry and underwent first ASCT between 1989 and 2007. A total of 203 patients underwent ASCT in first complete response (CR1), 174 in second complete response (CR2), 28 in third complete response (CR3), 140 in first partial response (PR1), 81 in subsequent PR, and 29 with resistant/refractory disease; 184 patients received rituximab before ASCT.

To identify molecular mechanisms underlying functional differences between Arg389 and Gly389 βARs, we examined their binding to β-arrestins (βarr-1 and -2), which mediate βAR signaling, in neonatal rat ventricular myocytes.
Methods: We tested the βAR-βarr interaction via βAR immunoprecipitation followed by βarr immunoblotting.

Background And Aims: Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is a devastating malignancy with incidence varying by geography and other risk factors. Rapid progression of disease and delays in diagnosis restrict the number of patients eligible for curative therapy. The objective of this study was to determine prognostic factors of overall survival in all patients presenting with hilar cholangiocarcinoma.

The molecular cause(s) underlying this SNS hyperactivity are not known. We have previously uncovered a neurohormonal mechanism, operating in adrenomedullary chromaffin cells, by which circulating catecholamine (CA) levels increase in heart failure: severe dysfunction of the adrenal α2-adrenergic receptors (ARs) due to the up-regulation of G protein-coupled receptor-kinase (GRK)-2, the kinase that desensitizes them.
