Nitric oxide is implicated in peripheral nociceptive processing. This study determined the effects of the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, L-NAME, on neural discharge from articular C-fibre afferents innervating normal and arthritic ankle joints in anaesthetized rats. Intra-arterial injection of L-NAME (10-20 mg kg(-1)) increased neural discharge in normal and arthritic ankle joints, whereas D-NAME (30 mg kg(-1)) had no effect.

The aim of this investigation was to use an objective measure, namely the measurement of CSA, to quantify the variability occurring during the course of the ultrasonographic assessment of the equine SDFT. The effects of 3 variables on the CSA measurements were determined.

Patients And Methods: All men admitted as an emergency with primary AUR caused by BPE (from August 1997 to March 2000) underwent a TWOC. The following variables were recorded; the nature and duration of any preceding lower urinary tract symptoms, previous episodes of retention, concomitant anticholinergic medication, coexisting constipation, alcohol as a precipitating cause of AUR, previous prostatectomy, confirmed urinary tract infection, residual urine drained on catheterization and prostate size, as determined by a digital rectal examination (DRE) carried out by one consultant urologist in all patients.
The parasympathetic terminal cardiac ganglia were examined in three normal horses and in five horses with grass sickness. Histopathological changes, consistent with those observed in other ganglia of horses with grass sickness, were identified in the terminal cardiac ganglia of the affected horses. A functional analysis of cardiac autonomic control by time domain analysis (TDA) of heart rate variability was applied to eight horses with grass sickness, and double-paired to 16 normal horses on the basis of their age, sex and breed, and the time of day at which the electrocardiographs were obtained.

An inflammation scoring system on a scale of 0 to 9 was devised to allow the severity of lower airway disease to be assessed from the cytological results. The inflammation scores were closely related to the isolation of bacteria (P<0.

M-mode echocardiograms were obtained in 5 clinically normal horses before, and at 0, 10, 30 and 60 min after a treadmill exercise test. The test was performed in a controlled environment at 20 degrees C/40% relative humidity (RH) and again at 30 degrees C/80% RH.

Patients were randomized to receive grepafloxacin 400 mg od for either 5 (n = 273) or 10 days (n = 268) or clarithromycin 250 mg bd for 10 days (n = 261). Patients were assessed pre-treatment, 3-5 days during treatment, 1-3 days post-treatment and at follow-up (21-28 days post-treatment).

Such examinations may be critical to diagnosis and patient management, yet medically necessary screening examinations are not reimbursed by insurers when the patient is "normal." Faced with this dilemma regularly in a children's hospital practice, we began tracking insurer acceptance of "diagnostic V codes," which are diagnostic codes generally related to symptoms or status conditions rather than to medical states.

Objective: This open, randomized, multicenter study compared the clinical efficacy of a short 5-day course of cefuroxime axetil (CAE) suspension with that of amoxicillin/clavulanate (A/CA) suspension for 8 or 10 days.
Thirty term infants undergoing general anesthesia and pyloromyotomy had pre- and postoperative sleep studies to determine whether these infants were at risk for postoperative apnea. Sleep studies showed an improved respiratory disturbance index (RDI) after surgery. Postoperatively, apnea indices were lower and lowest oxygen saturation values were increased compared to the infants' preoperative status.

A novel fluoropyrazole ribonucleoside has been shown to have significant anti-influenza activity in vitro. The compound is compared and contrasted with the structurally-related compound ribavirin in attempts to identify factors having significant bearing on the mode of action of both compounds.

A prospective, multicentre, randomized, open-label, parallel group study compared the efficacy, safety and tolerability of cefuroxime 750 mg iv administered either twice daily (bd) or three times daily (tds) for 48-72 h, followed by oral cefuroxime axetil 500 mg bd for 5-7 days in a sequential therapy regimen for the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. A total of 628 adult patients entered the study; 323 in the cefuroxime tds group and 305 in the cefuroxime bd group. For clinically evaluable patients, the post-treatment clinical response rate was 86% and 88% in the cefuroxime tds and bd groups, respectively.

Background: Antibiotic concentrations in serum and middle ear effusion are important in determining therapeutic success in acute otitis media. For beta-lactams the most relevant pharmacokinetic index for clinical efficacy is the time for which serum concentrations exceed the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the pathogen, which should be at least 40 to 50% of the dosing interval.
Methods: In this open, single center study, the concentration of cefuroxime achieved in the serum and middle ear effusion of pediatric acute otitis media patients with purulent effusion was assessed between 2 and 5 h after a single oral dose of 15 mg/kg cefuroxime axetil suspension.

Cystic fibrosis is associated with an inspissated bile syndrome producing cholestasis secondary to plugging of macroscopically normal bile ducts. In extreme neonatal forms, with early profound intrahepatic cholestasis, the process can be associated with a marked decrease in ductal diameter, varying from hypoplasia to atresia. From 1990 to 1995 three infants were identified with cystic fibrosis, persistent jaundice, and complete absence of biliary excretion despite expectant and conservative treatment including choleretics and surgical biliary irrigation.

Four winter acclimatised, nonheat acclimated horses of different breeds were exercised at 20 degrees C/40% RH (CD), 30 degrees C/40% RH (HD) and 30 degrees C/80% RH (HH). The exercise test was designed to represent the structure and intensity of a One star Speed and Endurance test (competition exercise test [CET]).

The intracellular concentration of 3TC 5'-triphosphate in phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) shows a linear dependence on the extracellular concentration of 3TC up to an extracellular 3TC concentration of 10 microM. At this extracellular concentration of 3TC, the resulting intracellular concentration of 3TC 5'-triphosphate is 5 microM.

A coiled coil of alpha-helices connects the two SH2 domains, producing an interface that constitutes one of the two critical phosphotyrosine binding sites. These and other unique features provide the molecular basis for highly selective association of ZAP-70 with the T-cell receptor.
