Impact of Early Reoperation on the Prognosis of Patients Operated on for Glioblastoma.

Background: The prognosis for patients with glioblastoma depends particularly on the degree of tumor resection. Patients with tumor remnants in postsurgical magnetic resonance imaging (<72 hours) may benefit from early reoperation. We present our results concerning the impact on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of reoperation in patients who have already undergone surgery for glioblastoma.

Surgical Outcomes and Comorbidities in Cushing Disease: 30 Years of Experience in a Referral Center.

Objective: Cushing disease (CD) is a rare, poorly understood entity. Our aim was to add our clinical experience of >30 years in a multidisciplinary specialized unit to the global knowledge of CD.

Primary cerebral malignant melanoma in insular region with extracranial metastasis: case report and review literature.

Background: Primary brain melanomas are very infrequent and metastasis outside central nervous system very uncommon. There are some cases in the literature about primary melanoma in the temporal lobe; nevertheless, the insular location has never been described.

Sequential antimicrobial treatment with linezolid for neurosurgical infections: efficacy, safety and cost study.

Background: Evidence for the effectiveness of linezolid in neurosurgical infections (NSIs) is growing. The comfortable oral dosage and tolerance of linezolid opens the possibility for sequential antimicrobial treatment (SAT) in stable patients after a period of intravenous treatment.

Methods: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of SAT with oral linezolid in patients with NSI and to analyse the cost implications, an observational, non-comparative, prospective cohort study was conducted on clinically stable consecutive adult patients at the Neurosurgical Service.

[Complications and outcomes in the elderly with intracranial meningioma].

Object: Surgical treatment in patients older than 70 years old with intracranial meningioma is still subject to controversy. The benefit/risk ratio of this surgery has not been assessed due to the lack of objective criteria. The aim of this study is to assess the surgical complications and outcomes in elderly patients in our centre.

Background: Symptomatic arachnoiditis after posterior fossa surgical procedures such as decompression of Chiari malformation is a possible complication. Clinical presentation is generally insidious and delayed by months or years. It causes disturbances in the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid and enlargement of a syrinx cavity in the upper spinal cord.

Intracranial hypertension in two cases of craniometaphyseal dysplasia: differing surgical options.

Craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD) is a very rare bone disorder characterized by abnormally developed metaphyses in long bones and sclerosis of the craniofacial bones. In this paper, the authors report 2 cases of children diagnosed with CMD and chronic intracranial hypertension with deletion in exon 9 of the human ANK gene (ANKH). After intracranial monitoring, a different treatment was chosen for each patient.

Cerebrospinal fluid penetration and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters of intravenously administered colistin in a case of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii meningitis.

Described here is a case of meningitis caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii susceptible only to colistin, which was treated successfully with intravenous colistin sulfomethate sodium (5 mg/kg/day). The levels of colistin in serum and cerebrospinal fluid and the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters of colistin were determined. In this case, intravenously administered colistin penetrated cerebrospinal fluid (25% of serum levels) at levels sustaining bactericidal concentrations.
