Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) are frequently found in Enterobacterales isolates from Western Africa. However, information on the molecular epidemiology of regional ESBL-positive Enterobacterales strains is scarce. In order to provide epidemiological information, ESBL-positive isolates from stool samples of European soldiers with diarrhea deployed to a field camp in Mali were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (Illumina MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore MinION) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Purpose: The SeMaCo study (Serologische Untersuchungen bei Blutspendern des Großraums Magdeburg auf Antikörper gegen SARS-CoV-2), a prospective, longitudinal cohort study with four survey phases spanning 3-5 months each over a period of 22 months, extends the spectrum of seroepidemiological studies in Germany. We present here a careful characterisation of the initial survey phase of the cohort to provide baseline data on infection incidence and obtained from questionnaires, focussing in particular on the attitude towards COVID-19 vaccinations, the vaccination success and the vaccination acceptance.

Participants: A total of 2195 individual blood donors from the donor pool of the blood donation service of the University Hospital Magdeburg were enrolled in the initial survey phase from 20 January 2021 to 30 April 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses a facultative anaerobic, Gram-positive bacterium that causes erysipelas in swine and birds, which can also infect humans, leading to conditions such as circumscribed erysipeloid and endocarditis.
  • A case study is presented involving a 46-year-old woman who experienced severe hand pain and restricted movement, ultimately traced to an infection from a pond contaminated by swine and her dog.
  • Detailed genomic analysis of the bacteria found in the patient's tissue revealed various factors linked to virulence and potential antibiotic resistance, including enzymes that help evade the host's immune response.

A male in his 60s with a history of previously treated locally advanced head and neck cancer presented to the emergency department with atraumatic left knee pain and upper and lower extremity ecchymoses that had been present for 3 weeks. His initial laboratory results showed a normocytic anaemia, normal platelet count, slightly abnormal coagulation studies and normal inflammatory markers. Arthrocentesis of the left knee revealed haemarthrosis, and additional laboratory workup found an undetectable serum vitamin C (ascorbic acid) level consistent with scurvy.

Professional society guidelines recommend semiannual screening for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with cirrhosis; however, studies suggest underuse of screening in clinical practice. Our study's aim was to characterize reasons for HCC screening underuse among patients with cirrhosis. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with cirrhosis diagnosed with HCC in two large health systems from 2011 to 2019.

Background: Quantitative analysis of differential gene expression is of central importance in molecular life sciences. The Gene eXpression Profiling technology (GeXP) relies on multiplex RT-PCR and subsequent capillary electrophoretic separation of the amplification products and allows to quantify the transcripts of at least 35 genes with a single reaction and one dye.

Results: We provide a kinetic model of primer binding and PCR product formation as the rational basis for taking and evaluating calibration curves.

White-nose syndrome (WNS), caused by the fungal pathogen (Pd), has driven alarming declines in North American hibernating bats, such as little brown bat (). During hibernation, infected little brown bats are able to initiate anti-Pd immune responses, indicating pathogen-mediated selection on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes. However, such immune responses may not be protective as they interrupt torpor, elevate energy costs, and potentially lead to higher mortality rates.

Premise Of The Study: Molecular genetic evidence can help delineate taxa in species complexes that lack diagnostic morphological characters. Pinus ponderosa (Pinaceae; subsection Ponderosae) is recognized as a problematic taxon: plastid phylogenies of exemplars were paraphyletic, and mitochondrial phylogeography suggested at least four subdivisions of P. ponderosa.

Background: Physicians have long reported that patients with chronic pain show higher tendencies for alcohol use disorder (AUD), and AUD patients appear to have higher pain sensitivities. The goal of this study was to test 2 hypotheses: (i) binge alcohol consumption increases inflammatory pain and mechanical and cold sensitivities; and (ii) tigecycline is an effective treatment for alcohol-mediated-increased pain behaviors and sensitivities. Both female and male mice were used to test the additional hypothesis that important sex differences in the ethanol (EtOH)-related traits would be seen.

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a spectrum disorder characterized by mild to severe symptoms, including potential withdrawal signs upon cessation of consumption. Approximately five hundred thousand patients with AUD undergo clinically relevant episodes of withdrawal annually (New Engl J Med, 2003, 348, 1786). Recent evidence indicates potential for drugs that alter neuroimmune pathways as new AUD therapies.
