Background And Aims: Skeletal muscle (SM) fat infiltration, or intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT), reflects muscle quality and is associated with inflammation, a key determinant in cardiometabolic disease. Coronary flow reserve (CFR), a marker of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD), is independently associated with body mass index (BMI), inflammation and risk of heart failure, myocardial infarction, and death. The relationship between SM quality, CMD, and cardiovascular outcomes is not known.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has an extremely poor prognosis, due in part to early invasion and metastasis, which in turn involves epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of the cancer cells. Prompted by the discovery that two PDAC cell lines of the quasi-mesenchymal subtype (PANC-1, MIA PaCa-2) exhibit neuroendocrine differentiation (NED), we asked whether NED is associated with EMT. Using real-time PCR and immunoblotting, we initially verified endogenous expressions of various NED markers, i.

Background: Segmented self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) are an alternative to conventional unsegmented SEMS in the treatment of esophageal strictures. Due to their segmented design, they may adapt better to the surrounding structures making them less likely to migrate or cause trauma. We examined if there are clinically relevant differences between segmented and conventional esophageal SEMS in benign and malignant stenosis in terms of their functionality and safety.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the potential of serum CD5L, a liver-derived protein, as an additional biomarker for assessing thyroid hormone (TH) status during pregnancy, where routine markers may change.
  • Researchers developed a sensitive assay to measure CD5L levels and investigated factors that might influence its concentrations, finding that it remained stable and unaffected by circadian rhythms or liver disease.
  • Results showed that CD5L positively correlated with free triiodothyronine (fT3) and trace elements like selenium and copper in pregnant women, suggesting its potential usefulness as a reliable TH status indicator, especially in pregnancy and thyroid-related conditions.

  • Crystalline materials like monazite show potential for storing radionuclides due to their stability under radiation, which is crucial for determining their effectiveness in immobilization.
  • High-resolution studies on LaCePO solid solutions examined how structural chemistry impacts their ability to withstand radiation, using techniques like SEM and GI-XRD to analyze the damage.
  • Results indicated that while radiation caused some structural damage and atomic disorder, the materials maintained short-range order and showed varying degrees of recrystallization based on their composition, influencing their overall resistance to radiation damage.

Background: The accuracy of blood-based early tumour recognition is compromised by signal production at non-tumoral sites, low amount of signal produced by small tumours, and variable tumour production. Here we examined whether tumour-specific enhancement of vascular permeability by the particular tumour homing peptide, iRGD, which carries dual function of binding to integrin receptors overexpressed in the tumour vasculature and is known to promote extravasation via neuropilin-1 receptor upon site-specific cleavage, might be useful to improve blood-based tumour detection by inducing a yet unrecognised vice versa tumour-to-blood transport.

Methods: To detect an iRGD-induced tumour-to-blood transport, we examined the effect of intravenously injected iRGD on blood levels of α-fetoprotein (AFP) and autotaxin in several mouse models of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or in mice with chronic liver injury without HCC, and on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in mice with prostate cancer.

  • Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is linked to a greater risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) as measured by the portosystemic hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES).
  • A multicenter study followed patients with MHE to see if worse PHES results led to a progressively higher risk of developing OHE.
  • Findings showed that while abnormal PHES indicates a higher chance of OHE, there isn't a stepwise increase in risk as PHES scores worsen beyond a certain threshold.

The Dickkopf family proteins (DKKs) are strong Wnt signaling antagonists that play a significant role in colorectal cancer (CRC) development and progression. Recent work has shown that DKKs, mainly DKK1, are associated with the induction of chemoresistance in CRC and that DKK1 expression in cancer cells correlates with that of protein arginine N-methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5). This points to the presence of a regulatory loop between DKK1 and PRMT5.
