Shigellosis outbreak among persons experiencing homelessness-San Diego County, California, October-December 2021.

During October 2021, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency identified five cases of shigellosis among persons experiencing homelessness (PEH). We conducted an outbreak investigation and developed interventions to respond to shigellosis outbreaks among PEH. Confirmed cases occurred among PEH with stool-cultured ; probable cases were among PEH with -positive culture-independent diagnostic testing.

Possible Exposures Among Mpox Patients Without Reported Male-to-Male Sexual Contact - Six U.S. Jurisdictions, November 1-December 14, 2022.

The extent to which the 2022 mpox outbreak has affected persons without a recent history of male-to-male sexual contact (MMSC) is not well understood. During November 1-December 14, 2022, CDC partnered with six jurisdictional health departments to characterize possible exposures among mpox patients aged ≥18 years who did not report MMSC during the 3 weeks preceding symptom onset. Among 52 patients included in the analysis, 14 (27%) had a known exposure to a person with mpox, including sexual activity and other close intimate contact (eight) and household contact (six).

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective and safe medical treatment for patients with severe mood and neuropsychiatric disorders. Since the advent of ECT, extensive research has been performed to identify the predictive factors for response to ECT. In recent decades, postictal suppression on an electroencephalogram (EEG) has been considered a potential predictor of response to ECT.

Background: Akathisia is a distressing extrapyramidal complication that follows the use of antipsychotic medications. Early treatment of neuroleptic-associated akathisia (NAA) is of great importance because it may lead to poor therapeutic response and ultimately treatment noncompliance. Considering the lack of adequate response of some patients to conventional treatments and the assumption that serotonin might be involved in the pathophysiology of the disease in addition to dopaminergic mechanisms, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of trazodone as an antidepressant agent with strong antagonistic effects on serotonin receptors in the treatment of akathisia.

Objectives: Despite the effectiveness of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in a wide range of psychiatric disorders, the role of memory-enhancing agents in post-ECT cognitive disturbances has remained controversial. In this study, we aimed to assess the effect of donepezil on improving the cognitive performance of patients undergoing ECT.

Methods: In a psychiatry hospital, patients who were admitted for ECT underwent a triple-blind randomized controlled trial.
