Bile acid metabolism is partially regulated through the activity of the gut microbiota. Primary bile acids can be deconjugated and modified by bacteria expressing bile salt hydrolase and other enzymes, changing bile acid recycling by changing the interactions between enterocytes and hepatocytes. The modified bile acids can also activate signalling in cells regulating metabolism including colonic L-cells, skeletal muscle cells and brown adipocytes.

Background: Bariatric surgery is internationally performed as a treatment option in obesity to achieve significant and sustained weight loss. There is an increasing number of women having pregnancies after bariatric surgery with mixed maternal and fetal outcomes, with a limited number of large, matched studies.
Objective: This study aimed to describe the type of prepregnancy bariatric surgery, analyze maternal, pregnancy, and offspring outcomes relative to matched women, and assess the impact of prepregnancy bariatric surgery on fetal growth, particularly the proportions of small for gestational age and large for gestational age infants.
Previous research has shown that delivery mode can shape infant gut microbiome composition. However, mothers delivering by caesarean section routinely receive prophylactic antibiotics prior to delivery, resulting in antibiotic exposure to the infant via the placenta. Previously, only a small number of studies have examined the effect of delivery mode versus antibiotic exposure on the infant gut microbiome with mixed findings.

It has been proposed that probiotic supplementation during pregnancy could be used as a possible preventative measure to target childhood allergic disease.
Methods: Participants from a previously conducted prospective double-blind randomised control trial of probiotics versus placebo study (Study of PRrobiotics IN Gestation) were sent electronic questionnaires to complete about their child, who are now between 3 and 7 years of age.
Aims/hypothesis: Pregnant women are advised to consume a minimum of 175 g per day of carbohydrate to meet maternal and fetal brain glucose requirements. This recommendation comes from a theoretical calculation of carbohydrate requirements in pregnancy, rather than from clinical data.
