An audit of pre-operative dental radiographs in patients who received no pre-operative dental input before cardiovalvular surgery.

Purpose To radiographically characterise dental disease burden and related characteristics of referred patients awaiting cardiovalvular surgery (CVS) in the context of infective endocarditis (IE) risk.Methods Radiographic evidence of dental disease levels was assessed for patients referred for dental assessment pre-CVS using available orthopantomographs (OPTs) prescribed by the cardiology team. This group did not receive any pre-CVS dental intervention or treatment.

Oral glucose tolerance test-The imperfect gold standard for gestational diabetes screening: A qualitative study involving clinicians in regional, rural and remote areas of Western Australia.

Issue Addressed: The oral glucose tolerance test is the 'gold standard' for detecting gestational diabetes in Australian and International guidelines. Test completion in regional, rural and remote regions may be as low as 50%. We explored challenges and enablers for regional, rural and remote antenatal clinicians providing gestational diabetes screening to better understand low oral glucose tolerance test completion.

Purpose: Explore community-based gym exercise for non-ambulant adults with childhood-onset disability.

Materials And Methods: Non-ambulant adults with childhood-onset disability participated in four, weekly gym sessions co-facilitated by physiotherapists and exercise professionals. Practicalities of participating in the sessions were recorded uptake and attrition, weekly surveys, and focus groups.

Introduction: Despite various studies on the impact of incontinence on patients' lives, the existing literature has not investigated the contribution of nursing care during rehabilitation in terms of quality of life. Fewer data, therefore, exist on the characteristics and perceived impact of the therapeutic relationship as part of the rehabilitation program.

Purpose: Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) has become a reliable tool for preventing the germline transmission of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants. However, procedures are not standardized across mtDNA variants. In this study, we aim to estimate symptomatic thresholds, risk, and chance of success for PGT for mtDNA pathogenic variant carriers.

Subjective Improvement in Hearing After Treatment With a Manic Episode in an Elderly Patient.

This is a report of an 81-year-old woman presenting with hearing improvement after a reduction of antidepressant medication to manage a manic episode. The patient reported a subjective improvement in her hearing ability, not confirmed by audiometric testing. It was reported to us that she stopped using her hearing aids subsequently.

Infective endocarditis and oral surgery input before cardiac surgery: time to prick the paradigm of pre-cardiac surgery assessments?

Purpose To review current practice regarding oral surgery input for patients awaiting cardiac valvular surgery and who are at risk of infective endocarditis (IE) in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to stimulate debate around the indications for pre-operative oral surgery assessment. It also opens the way to developing a new research-based approach which is patient-centred, safe, effective and efficient.Methods A desk-top based patient review was undertaken between 27 March 2020 and 1 July 2022 to record the outcome of patients undergoing cardiac valvular surgery in Northern Ireland, following the revision of the referral guidelines for oral surgery intervention.

Introduction: The teaching and learning experience of allied health and healthcare science students has altered because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Limited research has explored the experience on the future healthcare workforce using participatory research design. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of a global pandemic on the clinical and academic experiences of healthcare student using a co-production approach with student peer researchers.

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) m.3243A>G mutation is one of the most common pathogenic mtDNA variants, showing complex genetics, pathogenic molecular mechanisms, and phenotypes. In recent years, the prevention of mtDNA-related diseases has trended toward precision medicine strategies, such as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT).

Effects of mindfulness-based interventions on fatigue and psychological wellbeing in women with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised control trials.

Background: Cancer diagnosis and treatment can cause fatigue, stress and anxiety which can have a detrimental effect on patients, families and the wider community. Mindfulness-based interventions appear to have positive effects on managing these cancer-related symptoms.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of mindfulness on cancer related fatigue (CRF) and psychological well-being in female cancer patients.

Implementation of the 'Kimberley Mum's Mood Scale' across primary health care services in the Kimberley region of Western Australia: A mixed methods assessment.

The Kimberley Mum's Mood Scale (KMMS) was co-designed with Aboriginal women and healthcare professionals to improve culturally appropriate screening practices for perinatal depression and anxiety. This paper describes the implementation of the KMMS across the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia from January 2018 to December 2021. We used the Dynamic Sustainability Framework to progress the implementation and assess at the intervention, practice setting and ecological system level using a mixed methods approach to analyse implementation.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 has impacted upon the role and safety of healthcare workers, with the potential to have a lasting effect on their wellbeing. Limited research has been conducted during previous pandemics exploring how student healthcare workers are impacted as they study and train for their professional careers.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to examine the specific impact of COVID-19 on the academic, clinical and personal experiences of healthcare students.

Early childhood development practices in a remote Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services setting.

Objective: Supporting Early Childhood Development (ECD) is an Australian national priority. Aboriginal children in Western Australia's Kimberley region have much higher rates of developmental concerns at school entry than non-Aboriginal children. We aimed to describe ECD practices in the participating service; document follow-up of identified developmental concerns; and identify barriers and enablers to incorporating ECD practices into clinic activity.

Health screening questionnaires used in the management of mental distress acquired during an injured worker's return to work: A scoping review.

Background: Mental distress is often endured by injured workers participating in the rehabilitation or return to work process following a physical injury. Background: Young Aboriginal people are at an important stage in the development of their health and wellbeing. They experience significant morbidity and mortality, and their access to medical services may be limited by geographic remoteness and difficulty obtaining appropriate care. Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services offer primary health care considered to be more accessible for Aboriginal people.

Associations between long-term conditions and upper gastrointestinal cancer incidence: A prospective population-based cohort of UK Biobank participants.

Background/aims: Upper gastrointestinal cancers (oesophageal/stomach) have high mortality rates and are often diagnosed after the disease has progressed, making it important to identify populations at greater risk of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancer to promote earlier diagnosis. This study aims to determine if there is an association between a broad range of long-term conditions (LTCs) and incidence of UGI cancers.
