In the current study we developed a process for the capture of pDNA exploiting the ability of aqueous two-phase systems to differentiate between different forms of DNA. In these systems scpDNA exhibits a near quantitative partitioning in the salt-rich bottom phase. The successive recovery from the salt rich bottom phase is accomplished by a novel membrane step.

We investigated whether elevated ADMA concentrations predict major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with advanced peripheral artery disease (PAD).
Methods And Results: We prospectively enrolled 496 of 533 consecutive patients with PAD (median age 70 years, 279 males).
Context: Exercise training exerts beneficial effects on metabolic and vascular risk factors in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). It is unknown whether training also influences concentrations of visfatin, a novel insulin-mimetic adipocytokine.
Objectives: In this study, we have investigated whether plasma visfatin concentrations are altered by training in patients with T1DM.

Continuous progress in wastewater treatment technology and the growing number of households connected to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have generally resulted in decreased environmental loading of many pollutants. Nonetheless, further reduction of pollutant inputs is required to improve the quality of surface waters in densely populated areas. In this context, the relative contribution of combined sewer overflows as sources of wastewater-derived contaminants has attracted more and more attention, but the quantitative importance of these overflows has barely been investigated.

Early adjuvant hormonal therapy (AHT) has been shown to be of prognostic benefit in these patients. Unfortunately initiation and duration of early AHT in the individual patient is based on statistic data.

Since conservative treatments have failed to prove sufficient efficacy, surgery has turned out to be the most powerful option in treating morbid obesity. In this paper, the different surgical techniques with their advantages and drawbacks are presented.

We propose a design of the equal time correlation matrix suitable for the analysis of multivariate time series with ill-defined phases. We present the cross-correlation analysis of model data sets taken from coupled stochastic oscillators and compare the concept with the results obtained from a conventional correlation matrix analysis. We show that the concept provides a higher sensitivity combined with a better statistical significance when quantifying weak cross correlations.

We hypothesize that coronary segments with superficial foam cells (SFCs) situated in a region of interest with a depth of 200 mum can be identified using intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy (IFS) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). This is a key step in our ongoing program to develop a spectroscopic technique for real-time in vivo diagnosis of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque.

The boundary conditions for pDNA partitioning are set by PEG and salt concentrations, PEG molecular weight, pH, and temperature. While investigating these parameters, it was found that a small increase/decrease of the respective values led to a drastic and significant change in pDNA behavior.

We discuss the disorder dependence of the coercive field Hc, and obtain an analytical description of the smooth part of the hysteresis below and above Hc, by identifying the disorder configurations (instantons) that are the most probable to trigger local avalanches. We estimate the critical disorder strength at which the hysteresis curve becomes continuous.

Soft tissue infections constitute a serious complication following surgery in diabetic patients and frequently require the administration of vancomycin. However, despite antibiotic treatment, mortality of patients with postoperative infections remains high and might be related to an impaired penetration of anti-infective agents to target tissues. Therefore, the present study was designed to measure vancomycin tissue concentrations in six diabetic and six nondiabetic patients after cardiac surgery.

Bariatric surgery is accepted as the obesity treatment with the greatest long-term success. There is growing evidence that follow-up studies should address somatic as well as psychosocial conditions of patients undergoing bariatric surgery and non-operatively treated patients.

We determined the CK 20 mRNA expression in urine from patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder and assessed the biological behavior of such tumors in a 5-year follow-up. Second voided urine was preoperatively collected from 56 patients with bladder carcinoma, from 20 patients with nonmalignant urological diseases and from 40 healthy volunteers.

While research efforts have raised hopes of early and less invasive diagnosis, they have also brought to light the many issues to be tackled before mass-spectra-based proteomic patterns become routine clinical tools. Known issues cover the entire pipeline leading from sample collection through mass spectrometry analytics to biomarker pattern extraction, validation, and interpretation.

In the present pilot study we investigated the effect of food ingestion on target site pharmacokinetics of linezolid, the first clinically approved oxazolidinone. For this purpose we determined free concentrations of linezolid at steady state in the interstitial space fluid of skeletal muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue under fasting and non-fasting conditions in healthy volunteers (n = 9) by means of in vivo microdialysis. Ingestion of food led to a marked delay in the time to reach the peak concentration (T(max)), whereas the area under the concentration-time curve from 0 to 24 h (AUC(0-24 h)) remained unchanged.

The authors present a biologically inspired, analog approach to EEG analysis that is conceptually different from a variety of statistical approaches currently used. A nonlinear, excitable, spatially extended medium that is composed of diffusively coupled model neurons is considered.

In this context the minimal invasive microdialysis (MD) technique has been increasingly employed for the determination of pharmacokinetics in lung. Although lung MD is frequently employed to investigate various drugs and endogenous substances, the majority of lung MD studies were performed to determine the pharmacokinetic profile of antimicrobials that can be related to the importance of respiratory tract infections.

Stem cell factor (SCF) stimulation of the receptor tyrosine kinase c-kit has effects on the proliferation, differentiation, and apoptotic regulation of hematopoietic progenitor cell populations. Rat bone marrow myelomonocytic stem cells (MSC) isolated in vitro by wheat germ agglutinin culture exclusively undergo self-renewal divisions when stimulated by SCF but bipotentially differentiate in the presence of dexamethasone or 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) to granulocytes and macrophages, respectively. We show here that withdrawal of SCF from MSC induces rapid apoptosis in all stages of the cell cycle accompanied by development of an ultrastructural apoptotic morphology.

Nosocomial pneumonia is a severe complication after cardiac surgery (CS). Levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, qualifies for the therapy of postoperative pneumonia. However, penetration properties of levofloxacin into the lung tissue could be substantially affected by CS: atelectasis, low cardiac output after CS, high volume loads, and inflammatory capillary leak potentially influence drug distribution.
