Background: Several randomized trials have indicated that combination chemotherapy applied in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) does not significantly improve overall survival when compared to the sequential use of cytotoxic agents (CAIRO, MRC Focus, FFCD 2000-05). The present study investigates the question whether this statement holds true also for bevacizumab-based first-line treatment including escalation- and de-escalation strategies.

Methods/design: The AIO KRK 0110/ML22011 trial is a two-arm, multicenter, open-label randomized phase III trial comparing the efficacy and safety of capecitabine plus bevacizumab (Cape-Bev) versus capecitabine plus irinotecan plus bevacizumab (CAPIRI-Bev) in the first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.

Background: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the salivary glands is a routine procedure in the diagnostic workup of benign and malignant lesions. Primary malignant melanoma of the salivary gland is a rare disease, and only afew cases describing FNAC have been reported.

Case: We present a case of primary malignant melanoma of the right parotid gland.

Objective: To describe a cytomorphologic criterion that may help improve diagnostic safety in morphologic differentiation of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) from carcinoma or sarcoma and investigate the significance of this cytomorphologic phenomenon.

Study Design: Eighty-two smears of NHL, carcinoma and sarcoma smears were examined. Forty-five smears were from patients with carcinoma and 35 from patients with NHL.

Objective: To determine the usefulness of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in combination with flow cytometry on the new World Health Organization (WHO) classification of malignant lymphoma.

Study Design: Smears and flow cytometry reports of patients who underwent both methods at the same time were independently examined. Both methods were classified according to the new WHO classification of malignant lymphoma.

Purpose: Immunoglobulin heavy chain variable-region (VH) gene mutation status and zeta-associated protein 70 (ZAP-70) expression are correlated in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but their concordance is variable. The goal of this study was to elucidate additional factors potentially characterizing their discordance.

Patients And Methods: We evaluated ZAP-70 expression by flow cytometry, VH status by DNA sequencing, and genomic aberrations by fluorescence in situ hybridization in 148 CLL patients.

Here we describe the evaluation of 3'-[(18)F]fluoro-3'-deoxythymidine [[(18)F]-FLT] as a tracer for positron emission tomography (PET) in a murine model of B-cell lymphoma and in human malignant lymphoma. The human B-cell line DoHH2 expressed high levels of active thymidine kinase 1 (TK-1) as the key enzyme of [(18)F]-FLT metabolism. Immunostaining confirmed high levels of TK-1 in DoHH2 derived xenograft tumors in SCID/SCID mice.
